I would say 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" in diameter would 'promote' you. 1 1/4" - 1 1/2" would allow you to take most normal-sized plugs. Much larger than 1 1/2" and it's getting fairly advanced.

I consider myself an intermediate because I'm pretty comfortable up to about 1.5" for the glass toys that we use. One of these days I'm going to try some vixen toys to see if they are more comfortable in larger sizes.
