How flared is a "flared base"?

Contributor: Sangsara Sangsara 03/23/2013

so it was my understanding that a 'flared base' which is what is required for a toy to be considered safe for anal use, was a toy that got wider at the bottom- and that was it. This way, no matter how far you pushed it in, your ass would not be at risk of swallowing it. Well obviously with skinny minnie toys the flare would need to be significant BUT I have seen many reviews that claim that a toy is not flared which I just don't understand- Lelo for instance. Lelo handles are always flared in my opinion, as they are wider than the toy itself. The Lelo Billy is made just for men therefore assumed safe for anal insertion yet it isn't shaped drastically different than say the new Odeco Lillith. Does flared have to be like a Tantus toy or a suction cup?

is that little ring on the billy enough to make it different from lillith? which do you feel are safe for anal play?

I think that the Lilith is a 'warning, only for advanced users' anal safe. I'd probably say that you should always have a good hold on it when you use it (not just leave it in) and that it may not be the best for beginners.

I consider it anything that has at least 1/2 inch on each side past the main shaft of the toy.

You know, you can make any toy have a flared base by buying the flare part like these:

Vibrator Enhancers

Just in case you wanted to make a toy safer that you already have or it doesn't have a wide enough flare to not get stuck inside you.

I've seen quite a few toys that claim anal safe that I feel compelled to say in my reviews deserve caution. That doesn't mean you can't use those things anally, but it means you need to have a tight grip and be careful. It means there is a risk, and you need to act in a way that it smart, and minimize the risk.

I would also say that going hands free, or being seated with some of the anal toys out there without very wide bases is probably not the greatest plan.

I agree with Ryuson, the Lilith (and any Lelo really) could be used anally if you are careful, have a tight grip and don't try to sit with it in!

The Rocket, and Billy if you keep a good hold on it! (Though Billy doesn't really have a flared base, imo.)

Rocket only. Otherwise you're taking a chance.

I agree. The rocket is the only for sure flared, safe for anal use toy you have listed. There's definitely a chance, even if a slight one, that the handle of the Lelo toys could slip inside if you don't have a good grasp on it.

Toys like the rocket would be what i'd consider 100% anal safe as it has a lage flat base that is larger than the width of the toy, that i would also define as a "flared base." Billy's "flare", while made for anal play, just doesn't seem as safe unless you have a good grip or a very tight sphincter.

In most cases the Billy is fine. While the flare won't prevent the toy from being fully inserted if you sat on it, it's enough to prevent the toy from accidentally sliding all the way inside (and you know immediately if it starts to go in past the base).

Lilith's bulge wouldn't work well because it's gradual and could just slide inside before you realize it.

Generally if the flare at the base is larger than the widest point of the toy it is relatively safe. Now if you are used to handling larger toys you should be aware of the fact and take precautions if you get a toy that is not as large as what you are used to.

You're risking it with anything smaller than Rockets base.

I would also recommend the Vibrator Enhancers for anal play. We actually purchased a second set of them.

Try for at least 3/4" to an 1" overhang on the base, last thing you want is an ER trip.

I totally agree and think the big difference here is how you're using it. I've never felt remotely unsafe with the Billy because it isn't the type of thing you would sit on. I'm always in complete control over it in my hand and would feel if it started going past the base.
