I'm thinking the Vixskin is superior for harness use, but how does it handle during solo play? Is the soft, plushy, Tantus Maverick better due to the "long balls" and that nice "slappy" feeling that it gives during thrusting?

Other - it depends on what you like. I bought the Tantus Maverick for my wife. Although she likes toys of that size - it was just too, hard, straight and smooth.
We don't have the Vixskin one - yet - but we're looking into it. We have the Outlaw. It's more comfortable than the Tantus Maverick - but it's so big that it gets only occasional use.

The Tantus Maverick is probably made out of the same silicone that they use for the rest of the Cowboy line, and if so it's not very flexible in the large sizes that Maverick is unless it has bendy grooves like the Cowboy. The VixSkin Maverick is much more flexible, but still stiff enough for easy insertion.
I'm not sure about the balls giving you a slappy feeling - I have the O2 Max and don't notice the balls much other than as a conveniently shaped handle - I can feel them slightly on full insertion, but it's definitely not "slappy". Your experience may be different.
The downside to the VixSkin Maverick is the deep cutout at the bottom of the head. I find that I need a lot of warm-up before I can do hard thrusting, or else the head catches on the folds of the rectum. If you can spare an hour or so for warmup and play it feels great, with the ridge at the base of the head and the "foreskin bump" below that both playing against your prostate, as well as the fantastic texture down the shaft, but if you can't do all the warm-up and it catches then you are left with slow thrusting.

Really, I prefer the look of Maverick, but I like VixSkin better, so it's kind of a toss up.

I would have to say the VixSkin largely because of the curve. It would really get to those hard to reach places a little better imo. I like the texture and the flared head as well.
