We usually have me lie on my belly and he enters with his legs wrapped on the outside of mine. We also use side lying sometimes, but that usually is from turning while having sex. I find I can get good leverage pushing against the side board of the bed (we have a water bed) in a side lying position and help control the depth etc.

If you haven't done anal yet then you should do several things. The first is try different positions in a "dry run". You want to make sure that everything lines up while you're relaxed, since it can be harder to relax your anus if you're having to work to hold yourself in position.
The second thing is to try other forms of anal play first to learn how to relax and enjoy anal play before trying to take a penis or penis-sized object. Fingers and small toys are great here, and expect to take some time here to make sure you're ready.

For a long time, the only position me and my boyfriend had success with was first spooning, then moving into him on top, me on my stomach. I definitely recommend a position where it is easy for the receiver to spread their legs. For me that is key in comfort... If I can't spread my legs I definitely can't stretch enough to accommodate a cock in my butt.
