I've used rubber toys before, and so all I really want to know about this one is it a firm sort of rubber or does it have a bit of give to it?

Well, I haven't seen a review that addresses that question directly (maybe I missed it), but I did find quite a few that mentioned how "floppy" it was. That makes me think it's probably a rather soft toy.

A bit of both maybe. Quoted that from the review linked above. Unless it's just super hard rubber I'm pretty sure most toys will have some give or they'd be painful.
