I just want to point out though, while silicone won't have a taste.. Your teeth can tear silicone up!

Only if you're very rough with it or use a very soft silicone (VixSkin). The ordinary stiffness silicone can take quite a pounding/bite/squeeze. I've heard tales of dogs getting them with no permanent damage.
