What would you rather receive...

I'm curious as to what is better for a gift?

I've never been shopping for flowers or a box of chocolates but lets just say they were both really nice ones... Either would come with a card.

I've been wanting to make this post for a few days now. If you ask they might catch on to a gift, this is for like a surprise or something special out of the blue I guess..

It totally depends. I'm very picky about everything. I usually wind up tossing most chocolates but if I get to pick them out or something, then I'll love them. I may be a little more lenient with flowers but it's probably best just to give me the money so I can buy them. LOL

So would you prefer a gift card over flowers?

I love flowers - I get surprised with them a lot, and even though I think they're ridiculously expensive, I enjoy them,

I don't eat chocolate now, but even when I did the flowers were preferable.

If you're planning on giving this to a woman other than your mother, I'd go with something unique. Flowers and chocolates are dandy, and always appreciated, but they don't always stand out. The coolest present I ever got from a guy was a modified SNES controller I could plug into my computer, and a usb with every pre-N64 Nintendo game ever created. Sweet! I didn't really know the guy who got it for me all that well, but I wanted to get to know him after I got that awesome gift. Ain't that sweet? Not all women would be as thrilled as I was to receive video games, but that's not the point. The point is to get her something regarding one of her interests that caters to her personality if you want her to really feel special. I didn't really answer your question flowers or chocolates, but I hoped that helped.

P.S. I'd go with flowers, but not roses.

It depends on the situation, really. Most of the replies to this thread seem to assume that you are getting something for a special lady, but it could just as easily be your mother, cousin, a special guy, or something else completely. We don't know the occasion either, so it's hard to give general advice.

If you're taking someone out for the first time, bringing flowers and/or candy is ok. Candy can be hit or miss, depending on that person's tastes, so unless you have a pretty good idea of what exactly they like, skip the candy and just bring some flowers. They do require a little bit more work to take care of (the recipient has to find a vase, fill it with water, cut the stems, etc.), but they look and smell nice for a while and I don't know anyone who doesn't like getting flowers (not saying they don't exist... I just don't know any).

If this is someone you've been seeing for a while, or just someone you have known for a while and you want to get something nice for them, it is far better to get something that will last longer than either flowers or chocolate, as well as something more personal that shows you have taken the time to really get to know them. When my boyfriend and I started dating, he found out that I had a dismally small music collection and he started to burn CDs for me. We still share music now... it's just one of the ways we communicate.

Hope that helps even a little bit! Good luck

As much as I love chocolate, I love flowers even more, and I get them even less. My friend got me a white rose for my birthday two weeks ago (since we had the party early) and I was ecstatic.

More than anything, I would rather have a gift that's personal. My first boyfriend bought me a maiko doll; it was cheap, less than a bouquet of roses, but it was something that he bought for me based on what I like (I LOVE geisha), and it was a really pretty doll.

I'd love either one. I love flowers, and I'm a chocoholic. So basically, I'm no help here. I guess it kind of depends on the person.

And wow, Machina, that would be an awesome gift. Thoughtful, too. I'm one of the weird ones like you. I love just about anything game related.

Depending on the relationship, I would rather shop WITH you. Then, it will be win-win.

Miss Cinnamon mentioned that flowers require more work but not always. You can always bring them in a vase.

I almost never get either from my husband and while a really thoughtful gift would be better, I'd be thrilled just to get flowers on a regular basis, even if I don't like them. Heh

Eh, yeah, I guess I feel pretty much the same way. I flip out and get all giddy when I get flowers or some kind of gift nowadays, pretty much no matter what it is. It's really nice when he brings home a java chip frappuccino from Starbucks. One of my favorite kinds of gifts.

Darn. I wish my flowers came in a vase.

* pouts *

Shopping with is a cool idea... but then, is it still a surprise?

I love both but the chocolates would have to be sugar free and that limits that.
I love flowers but they don't last very long..
I would rather have something for my yard (figurines, hanging baskets) or a gift card where I can get whatever I want.
Or the best ever would be a surprise from EF if hubby is the one getting it for me...

I love flowers, but they never seem to last long. I don't like sweets though! Hate the taste of sweets. I love fresh fruits though! I guess you could call me weird! LOL

I'd take Belgian chocolates over any kind of flower (unless someone somehow managed to come up with a honeysuckle bouquet). But I'd rather someone get me an interesting book (often cheaper than flowers or chocolates anyway!), or a really nice candle (nice x=x expensive)...something that will last a longer time and remind me that the giver caught on that I liked something and thought about what to give. Flowers and chocolates are very generic (acceptable for new lovers, but a little odd for someone who knows you well).

I would choose neither, I find them so boring it's always the same kind of gifts.
I much prefer something the person made. Like a beautiful letter or card with calligraphy and scrapbooking accesories. The time and love that goes into creating such a card is priceless. On top of that the message can be personalized and include special details that you know and love about that person. It's cheap but it means a lot.
This is given you know the person really well.

Chocolates all the way! Food is always on the top of the list for me. In the end though, i would rather have something i can wear...like a small chain or something. I tend to be really picky though.

Chocolate! I am so addicted to dark chocolate! Besides, isn't it supposed to be an aphrodisiac?

I don't really like chocolate all that much - unless it is a good quality brand (Harry and David yummy!). But, I love to look at flowers. SO pretty!

No. Just no. Unless you know the girl will really like flowers or chocolate, don't go there. It's just lame.

Personally I think neither. I'd much rather receive a very thoughtful and LASTING gift. Flowers are nice on occasion and out of the blue but for the price that flowers can run you I always feel it's a better bet to get something that's going to last...

I like books or weird knick knacks, something I can keep to remind me of those moments. Flowers over chocolates everyday as I am picky as to what type of choccie I eat. Handpicked flowers even better.

I'd much prefer some little trinket that means you actually thought about it. Any little sign that you know something more about me than my name and that I have tits.. that would be the nicest gift.

I'm weird, I ask for flowers in a pot so they can still live. So I'd rather have the chocolates usually, because it's too much to ask one to buy me a potted plant, lol.

I'm not a fan of either, although there was the time that a friend plucked some wild flowers for me the day after my father died. But it was more the sweetness of the gesture than the flowers. When giving gifts, I prefer to give something specific to that person's tastes. If a friend adored coffee, I'd get them their favorite coffee, a gift set, or some new coffee to try. Same with tea. Or music. Or food. Lots of things to choose from apart from chocolates or flowers.

Out of those two choices, I would pick flowers because I can't eat chocolate.
