Do you think town recycle centers should take old and broken sex toys?

you can recycle everything else, why not sex toys

As much as I want to say yes, think of some of the people in your community. If they cannot be trusted to take the tops off of their soda bottles what makes you think they wouldn't turn in a contaminated toy?

If one thing in a bin/truck of recycling is contaminated (i.e. - broken batteries, certain soaps, residues) they have to trash the entire group. This would lead to additional millions of pounds of recycling being trashed each year.

i think it's a good idea to recycle the parts they can. as long as they clean all of the parts correctly nothing can harm you. it's a great idea in my opinion.

I know it is not that easy but it could happen.
All things considered, this would be the direction to go. There are lots of types of trash or recycling that can get icky and strange, as well.

Sex toys are an interesting part of consumerism. You can't very well give them to the goodwill; its not a good idea to trash them. So what do you do? Especially when you take into account the toxins in some toys--it is a scary landfill, that.

Oh my gosh that would be AWESOME!!! I often feel bad about throwing away broken or unwanted toys and I would definitely send them in for recycling! Maybe they could even include those prepaid-envelopes with new orders like some of the printer cartridge people do?

I was thinking the exact same thing while reading these responses... There is tons of biohazard waste in stuff that we throw away (use your imagination... especially the ladies.. YUCK!!) I think sex toys are no worse than anything else we throw away really...

Hmm not sure if that would cause health problems with others. Would that be unhealthy to share toys?

I'm not sure how sanitary it would be to recycle old toys.

Much of the material couldn't be easily reused, either. TPR and jelly are unidentified proprietary mixes (generally), and silicone is pretty much one-shot. Metal and glass sex toys could definitely be recycled.

I think part of the problem is expectation - electronics recycling centers don't expect to have to deal with body-fluid contaminated stuff. Even though keyboards are yucky, it's a little different, especially from the liability side.

"Do you think town recycle centers should take old and broken sex toys?"

I'd think that you could recycle aluminum and stainless steel toys. No? Who wants to put their Njoy plug in the recycle bin to see if it gets recycled?

Will they take a glass dildo if you chose to put it in your recycle bin? Probably not. Since Pyrex cannot be recycled along with other glass, most municipalities will not accept Pyrex dishes. So, they will not knowingly accept Pyrex (borosilicate glass) sex toys either.

As far as the soft toys. Which manufacturer makes a dildo out of recycleable materials? I just checked my toy box and none of our toys are labeled with the recycling code identifying what specific recyclable material they are made from.

The most commonly recycled plastic is polyethylene terephthalate (PETE). Who here is longing for dildos made from this? Do you really want your next water bottle to be labeled "made from recycled dildos"? I'm thinking, that would not go over so well.

Additionally, many types of plastic are just too difficult to recycle. Some municipalities will not even accept Tupperware due to its low rate of recyclability. If they don't take Tupperware or all of the crappy imported children's toys, then why should they take adult toys that aren't properly labeled for recycling?

Most unwanted, discarded sex toys have no other alternative than to end up in our landfills. I'm sorry, but that is how it is. It will require both the manufacturers and the consumers to make significant changes before progress can be made on this front. Unfortunately, I just don't see this happening any time soon. There are bigger battles to fight. I'd bet that discarded children's toys have a much, much larger impact on our landfills than sex toys do.

That is a very, very good point...

And I think I would buy a product that said "made from recycled dildos" just for the novelty! But then, the people on EF (myself included) aren't good representations of the general population. It would probably just be us that would find that hilarious and awesome.

The day sex toys are recycled regularly in your neighborhood is the way we will have to see sex toys available at your nearest pharmacy or department store

All joking aside. I agree with Mr. E. I don't see this happening. Even juice and milk containers, which are made from more than one material are close to impossible to recycle. Vibes and dildos are often made of several materials, have motors in them, and have been used in body orifices. I know in hospitals ANYTHING touching bodies or bodily fluids are "Red Bagged" and have to be disposed of as medical waste. Would you want your next pop bottle made from someone's old Urinary Catheter or IV bag and tubing? I don't think so. Same goes for sex toys.

It may seem like a good idea, but it isn't practical, nor is the public at large going to accept it, nor is is feasible, with not only multi-material-ed products and bodily fluids and orifices to contend with.

This is awesome! I think there's some really simple chemical processes that can be used to sterilize the toys and degrade them to form something useful again. The benefits seem to for sure outweigh the costs, because there's such great quality silicone and rubber and machinery out there that shouldn't have to just be thrown away! Reuse and recycle

I don't have a problem if an organization does this such as Eden but the local recycling center, I don't believe people should be allowed to do such things because some members of society such as mentally retarded are allowed to work there

I say yes. It saves landfil and if something can be recycled, then why not. I agree with SRose. Theres so many things we all come into contact with daily that are health risks. There was a test done on shopping trolleys awhile ago where they found feces and all sorts. We all touch that when we go shopping. I wouldn't mind betting most of our toys are cleaner than those filthy trolleys!

Actually, I think it depends on the recycling center. The ones that sort by materials and melt everything down already do take whatever you toss in the recycling bin, so you can just take things apart and toss them in that way. But the centers that recycle items by actually finding new homes for used items -- no. It already ticks me off that some of them sell used bicycle helmets, which is dangerous.

For those that mention biological contamination being a reason for no- I am SO with you there! Some people can't be brought to wash their hands after using the restroom, how can they be bothered to wipe down a dirty dil before recycling?

For those that mention there already being biological waste this would be a concern were the question about garbage but they are talking about recycling. Biologically contaminated products are NOT supposed to be recycled and some can't- the pads and tampons that someone else mentioned for example- because there's nothing recyclable about them.

I think sex toys should be more widely recyclable, but not necessarily by towns. There are far too many towns that skimp out on their recycling services as is, and sex toys is REALLY something you don't want mucked up!

If there was a good way, sure! But I guess I'm with the others who cite possibly unfounded health concerns - if it was assuredly safe from any possible health issues, then I'd think that it's a good idea.
