There are lots of posts on this topic, but to address your question. I believe the consensus is that yes men are visually stimulated so sexy clothes, costumes and lingerie are good at getting us in the mood. Of course there are those who find it superfluous - and yes naked works as well!
For me personally, I wish my wife would do it more - I think she finds the fleeting nature of the clothes make it worth the extra effort. If I had to guess she only does it for me.

I personally love to see the sexy underwear. Well, specifically, panties. A sexy bra (aside from what a push-up bra does to cleavage) doesn't do much for me. It's not so much seeing sexy panties on her that I find appealing, but the knowledge that she is wearing them to arouse me.
