Aspartame in lubricants

Contributor: Alicia Alicia
For those of you that are sensitive to aspartame, what does it being in your lube do to you? Is it just if the lubricant is an oral one and you use it orally and therefore ingest the aspartame that it affects you? Or does the aspartame being in the lubricant affect you topically?

Everybody's body chemistry is different, and "sensitivity" can look wildly different from person to person, so take this with a grain of salt-- your reaction may not be the same as mine. If you're sensitive to aspartame, I'd err on the side of caution and avoid lubricants containing it.

That said, I am what I would consider to be "moderately" allergic to aspartame. It didn't even occur to me that it could be an ingredient in lubricants, and so the first time I used one, it caught me by surprise. After using this lube for vaginal sex, I had pain, itching, and hives everywhere the lube had touched me. NOT fun.

I don't do oral lube and so I'm not sure what would happen if I ingested lubricant containing aspartame.

I'm not willing to take the chance. I am highly allergic to it, and it causes some terrible reactions for me. I developed the allergy to it over time, and once finding out what it was doing to me, I got rid of it in anything I came in contact with. I've been clean of it for about 5 years now, and if I accidentally ingest it (in gum, food, you name it), I get a raging headache and some of my prior symptoms come back. For me, it's better safe than sorry, so I won't even consider a lube with it in.

Thanks guys! I'm not sensitive to it or anything, but I was just wondering because at one point I thought I might be and had read up on the symptoms but I wasn't sure if those symptoms would still occur if it was used topically. When I write reviews on lubricant with aspartame I mention to use caution if you have a sensitivity or an allergy to it..but I never really knew what would happen if someone with a sensitivity DID use it, so thanks for clearing that up for me!

I try to avoid it, or at least avoid eating in in bulk. I get migraines from aspartame, but even when we have had lube with some in it, I didn't get enough in my mouth to trigger a migraine.

I avoid diet pop like the plague, though. I wish I could get SUGAR in my pop, (I like sugar) but it's only a seasonal thing, now. I am not fond of corn syrup, so I drink water most of the time.

I think, though, if you have PKU (meaning you can't break down the sugars and sugar links in things like Aspartame and Galactose) you should probably avoid ANY aspartame in any quantity. Even topically or in your mucous membranes.

It's really rare, they have tested babies for PKU for decades, so you'd probably know if you were sensitive to it, (that and you can't drink cow milk, or any other dairy and many other foods.) In these people it can actually cause brain damage.
