I think sometimes it's as simple as the way something is presented. (Not always, definitely, but it can sometimes make a difference.) Imagine if your male partner brought you home a workout DVD, and said "here, you really need this, because you aren't hot enough for me right now". It would probably be hurtful.
And granted, you probably didn't say those words when you gave him these items, but it may have felt that way to him. I don't think things like cock rings, penis pumps or pills to make him last longer should ever just be "brought home" and sprung on a partner. That kind of sensitive issue should be discussed in a supportive, loving way, and a decision should be made together on such issues.
