It all depends on the material and what I am wearing it for. Stainless rings go one before as that is the only way to get one on. Sometimes I like to surprise the wife so I will put on softer material rings before hand. That way she 'finds' it when she grabs my package. Other times I like to put one on mid way during sex just to add some more stimulation for the wife.

Depends on the ring. Some are only meant for the shaft portion. Some can work behind the balls. For the shaft type, I like to put it on when erect. For the ball type, before full erection.

Like others have said, it depends. With rigid materials, such as metal, you need to put it on before you get an erection. Also, with the rings that go around your balls too need to be put on before you get hard.

Not too soft and not too hard. Adjustable rings are easier the closer to being hard you are. Ridgid rings go on better if you are a little softer.

Most cock rings (not all) are used when the penis is semi-hard or flaccid. If the balls are going to be included in the ring, then they are placed in the ring first, then carefully the penis is placed in. That won't work with a fully erect penis!

"Starter" cock rings, like the really stretchy, one time use ones with little vibrators on them can be used on an already erect cock, as they are usually only used at the base. Like the Screaming O Vibrating Ring.

Use lube! On the penis and balls. Otherwise it will pull on skin and hair.

And beginners really should use something flexible. Metal and ceramic cock rings have to be measured for and are best for those who have a lot of experience with cock rings.

We've found that that rascal wants to get hard while the ring is being put on, so you have to work carefully, but fast!

I have tried both ways. It tends to be easier to do so before the erection, but we sometimes don't think about it until we have already been playing for a while.
