Do not use on unexplained calf pain

On the safety information of the vibrator I just reviewed (the Iconic Smoothie by Jimmyjane), it says warns, "Do not use on unexplained calf pain."

I thought this was pretty weird, and oddly specific. So of course, I looked it up.

DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) is a type of blood clot that occurs in deep vein of a lower extremity - such as the calf. Using the vibrator there could break the clot free from the wall and allow it to cause an embolism in heart, lungs, etc.

I don't remember ever seeing this warning before, though my search showed that it's on lots of them (and one source said the FDA says it HAS to be, but I'm not sure about the validity of that).

I'm not sure what's more alarming: that any of my vibrators could kill me if I had DVT and didn't know it.. or that I've been using sex toys for years now and have only just come across this information. Scary!

I've noticed this warning on a few of my vibes, but I didn't know what it was about until now. Thanks for sharing the information!

Every one I have ever purchased has had this warning...and it is actually a pretty serious warning.

DVT is a leading killer of people with mobility issues such as COPD. Any sudden or unexplained muscle pain in the legs should warrant a trip to the doctor given the risk of death should the clot break free, it's freakishly quick as well. DVT can also cause necrosis of the muscle tissue and a host of other problems. I doubt most vibrators would have enough power to break a clot loose but I wouldn't wanna volunteer to be the test subject! Nasty nasty little problem.

Yeah Airen, that's pretty much it.

They don't want to be held responsible for an array thrown clots.

Thanks for the warning. I never noticed it on any of my toys but I am not a good one on reading instructions anyway. Instructions with toys are mostly useless: "For use as a novelty item only" whatever that means.
I am aware of DVT but never gave it a thought in regard to my vibes.

I've seen it on every toy if I care to read all the fine print. Every single one I have except those with no documentation (watch battery bullets).

It is just a butt-covering statement, but I think overall that, you know, its not bad advice. Usually when I have pain anywhere in my leg its just a charlie horse or pulled muscle, I know that so I choose to do stuff anyways but I rarely use my stuff as a body massager regardless.

COPD -Congestive Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is not a cause or risk factor for DVT. COPD is asthma, emphysema or bronchitis. Risk factors for DVT are surgery, obesity, smoking, PVD , pregnancy,(peripheral vascular disease), any disorder that thickens the blood like hyperlipedemia (high cholesterol) sickle cell anemia (because of the sickle cell shape, it can cause clots), certain drugs like hormones (steroids as well), long plane rides, bed rest or sitting long periods of time so that blood pools. Bone and soft tissue injuries are factors as well. A dislodged clot can get stuck in a vein or possibley circulate into an artery. If the clot enters an artery it can impede circulation and cause ischemia, or lack of oxygen to a limb (it turns dusky as if it had a tourniquet on it) the heart (a myocardial infarction), the lungs (pulmonary emboli) the uterus (uterine emboli) or the brain (cerebrovascular accident or "stroke").

It is a butt covering statement.Powerful vibrators such as Hitatchi, etc always carry this disclaimer.
