My husband and I have been together 5 years and the last 2 have been long distance. It is hard but in some ways we have grown closer than we would have if we were together. Since we do not see each other often, we have to communicate through words alone. This has really improved our communication. We talk multiple times a day. In fact we actually talk more when we are apart than when we are together. Seems like when we are together we always find something besides talking to do. Don't get me wrong it is very difficult. You really have to be committed and have a lot of trust in the other person. You also have to be fairly independent so that you can handle the times when you must do things on your own because your partner is not there to help. We do not have children, but I imagine that would add yet another level of complexity to a LDR. For us it has worked and brought us closer.

I think if both people are really determined to make things work then a long distance relationship is possible. It really does depend on the type of people and what both people want out of the relationship. I know a couple married for 2 years and the whole time they have lived apart. They are still doing wonderful. They really can work.

Mine only lasted 4-5 months. Back then long distance rates were a killer. Being separated and time Zones made it difficult. Not to mention, I was still in college and working full time. She moved to Hawaii. I stayed in Cali. It s not like I could have drove to see her every now and then. Bummer at that time, but then along came OW

I've been with my husband for 10 yrs and he's gone for weeks and months at a time for work. It's been like this for 9 yrs. Right now, I've only seen my husband for 3 days in the past 6 weeks. It's certainly not easy but completely do-able if communication is open and constant. Texting and skype are life savers. Both partners have to want it and work on it but yes, ldr can work.
