I've read that what is generally diagnosed as TMJ is usually a result of grinding your teeth in your sleep, which results in jaw joint pain.

Sleeping with a mouthpiece often stops the grinding, and chewing a half-stick of gum moves the jaw a little to prevent stiffness, but is not as intense a jaw workout as a whole piece of gum.
