I am curious what your technique is for shaving the pubic hair?
For me:
- With doesn't remove enough
-Against causes too many cuts (like including bleeding.. I guess from the hair getting pull and cutting the skin)
- But going to the side is just right. Closer than going with the grain, but not enough to cut the skin or cause super amounts of razor burn.
So I vote: #3
(BTW, I just put this in the Men's sexual health area because I couldn't find a neutral section, and decided here since the creator of this poll(myself) am a male)

#1. Invest in a high quality razor like the Fusion. The little AAA battery lasts forever and the 5 vibrating blades make for a smooth comfortable experience.
#2. Use only high quality shaving cream. I use to use Edge Gel - which worked fine. Then I tried Coochy Cream and it worked even better. But I found a more effective and cheaper solution by using hair conditioner - you'll notice the consistency is about the same as Coochy Cream at a fraction of the cost.
#3. Clean the razor frequently with hot water - especially if you're trying Coochy Cream or conditioner.
Yes I have that razor. (Both vibrating and non-vibrating versions are all that i use) I don't know how much the vibrations do to give a closer shave but it certainly feels interesting, haha.
I have tried a shaving cream before, but it just seems to frequmently clog the razor more and make a mess, so I just do it in the shower now with just water.
Although I guess I could try some other products.
Indeed, I do clean the razor frequent.
After every stroke I run the razor in reverse over my arm, leg or hand to get the hair out of the blades.

I shave in the shower as well - but would never consider doing it without shaving cream - if I had to guess - because I'm not going to try it - if I shaved without shaving cream I would have the same problems you describe with bumps, bleeding, etc.

I shaved a couple times and loved the feel of being totally smooth, but the cuts and ingrown hairs weren't worth it to me. I now just trim with the shortest guard on my trimmer.
I shave downward, or with the grain. It prevents ingrown hairs and shave bumps. Also there are bikini hair removal kits at walmart that work well after you shave to keep hair growth down.
I go up against the grain because like people have already said on this thread, you really have to invest in a good quality razor for this. I use Aveeno shaving gel and it has to be the best shaving gel I've ever used, hands down. It has really soothing nutrients in it, including oat and allantoin. It feels so nice, especially on that sensitive part while you're shaving. It's even better on my legs, but I won't go there because this is about pubic hair. Haha!

Thanks for recommending that - I didn't even know Aveeno made shave gel but I love their other products

Good luck!
I use conditioner too, but lately it hasn't been working well - I think I just went too cheap, though.
I used to shave against the grain, but it ended up causing so much irritation and ingrown hairs that I think my pussy looked worse than it did when it was fuzzy. I shave with and to the side of the grain only nowadays, which doesn't give me perfect smoothness, but it works with minimal razor burn.
I use a "scrubbing technique'. That's the way we do a surgical prep shave.
What is this scrubbing technique?
As for me - I do it once with the grain, and then a second time against the grain. I suppose certain areas get a to the side treatment. I do it all with lotion to guard against bumps, with a little bikini razor.
Tried an electric once, but the bumps afterwards where god awful.
You guys are gonna think I'm nuts, but here goes...
I'm totally OCD about body hair, especially pubic hair, so I have quite a routine. Before shaving I apply an alcohol-based solution called "No Bump" (up to a day before if I remember to, because it's supposed to be used up to 3 days prior-but I shave every other day or so) which I get from Sally Beauty- in case you're curious! Right before shaving, I also apply the No Bump to my razor. A big cause of razor burn/bumps is bacteria, so if you clean your razor in alcohol, it kills the bacteria, leading to a smoother shave.. it actually helps! When I shave, I use Bikini Zone Anti-Bumps shave gel, or Coochy when I can get my hands on it... and I shave in a ridiculous combination-- basically every direction but directly against the grain. I have a very specific routine, but it's kind of hard to actually describe so I'll leave it at that.
After I get out of the shower I apply- don't laugh!- diaper rash cream, because it helps prevent razor burn.
Okay, I definitely sound crazy. At least I'm usually very smooth!
Jesibel420, that is really helpful. I also get terrible ingrown hairs (AKA: Pseudofolliculitis pubis) about 2 days after shaving. If shaving against the grain it is worst, but going to the side, it will just be about 50 or so smaller red bumps (which are just "normal" for me)
I try and use things like Neutrogena For Men shaving cream/gels and face washes (or other cleaning products with salicylic acid in it) to help reduce the amount of skin that can cause the hairs to grow under and in.
This seems to help reduce it, but it never stops it from happening (not to mention I always keep around some LaCrosse steel tweezer items to help dig in and get the hair out of there. (LaCrosse ones seem to be the best because of their grip on the hairs. Tweezerman is no good, in my opinion)
Ill have to look into trying some of your technique and see if it helps more.
Thanks

Glad I could be of service. I've tried a lot of different techniques, including shaving against the grain, and I've found this works best for me. I still get an ingrown hair or slight razor burn every now and then, especially if the razor is looking a little on the dull side, but it's never terrible.

Hope it works for you!
Thanks! I bet I will notice some improvement at least.
That is a great idea with cleaning the razor because that could possibly be what causes some ingrown hairs to get more infected-pimpley-like than others, from remaining bacteria.
I wonder if it would be better to do rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or both.
What kind of razor do you use?
I have been considering using a female's razor to notice any changes, but Im not sure how much of a difference there might be. I think the Venus Vibrance is the female equivalent of the Fusion (if I recall correctly), and I would be curious in checking that out.
I use the Gillette Fusion razors (the vibrating kind, hehe) and tried both the regular and new "glide" blade. Both seems to show equal results, although I have noticed that sometimes a duller blade works better for me (odd huh?)... but it could just be the way I am using it, or amount of pressure I am applying.
Other things I have tried include:
epilator - works well and stay smooth for about a week and a half, but when they come back in, horrible ingrown hairs occur -- maybe ill try it with some of the salicylic acid products now and see if i notice less
waxing - dont even bother (i did it myself and ended up being way too hot and not working even that well.
nair/chemical - will never do this again! it doesn't appear to work at all for pubic hair, just makes your skin bleed, and burns like crazy. Seems to work fine for legs and thighs, but no where closer.
I use Nair Shower Power Max. Never had any problem with burning, bumps, bleeding, ext. and I have extremely sensitive skin. I can't shave the upper portion of my pubic area because I get extreme ingrown hairs that scar, even if I use salicylic acid products afterwards.
I had problems with Veet not working and causing burning, but the Nair designed specialy for course hair works great on longer stuble. I use it once a week (to allow the hair to grow out a little) then apply about 5 min before hoping in the shower, let it sit another 2-3 min in the shower then whipe it away with the sponge for a nicely groomed and soft public area.
Still leaves a little bit of stuble but the cream softens up any leftover hair and it's definitely worth it for no razor bumps or rashes.
I wouldn't advise using Nair right between your legs or near the vagina or lips, but works great for the upper portion. I just carefully shave the rest.

Definitely try both if you're feeling up to it! I have tried a combination of the two, and honestly it didn't seem to be much different from just alcohol, (or the alcohol-based solution I buy) but it definitely won't hurt.
I actually use Mach 3 men's razors and find they work much better for my pubic area than women's razors (which I use for my legs) or the Gillette Fusion. The Fusion has too many blades and actually caused more irritation than the Mach 3. Also- I just buy the traditional Mach 3 cartridges- I find they work better, and last longer than the other Mach 3 versions.
I've read that the fewer blades, the better for the pubic area because of the coarseness of the hair. So, to get a good balance between smoothness and lack of irritation, 3 blades works pretty perfectly in my opinion

Wow, wonderful insight that is!
I will try the razor soaking, and also try some different razors perhaps.
You know, that is quite informative about the female razors, because I noticed that sometimes the bulkier the razor, the harder it is to shave the pubic areas, and the female razors are the bulkiest and largest I see. That would make sense that they are very geared towards leg shaving because of a large surface area to cover.
Funny enough, there have been sometimes when using a razor with 2 or 3 blades, and I got a really good shave, and sometimes worked better than the Fusion.
Its a little of both for me. These also work great link there meant for eyebros but work for that area very well just for the upclose shaving. I think there alot more helpfull for shaving around the shaft and testicles cause you can get super close.
