What causes “morning wood”? Well, guys wake up with erections because they have been sleeping with erections. The technical term is “noctural penile tumescence”. In a penis's normal, flaccid state, it doesn't get much blood flow. If it did, it would be erect. To keep the penis flaccid, the arteries leading into it are shut down to a trickle. Like most of the body, tissue doesn't do well without a regular flow of blood. The body's solution, though, is to open up the valves at night and let the fresh blood come in which causes noctural erections, and in turn, tends to make some guys wake up with morning wood!
