Neither I, nor my partners, have herpes (either type 1 or 2). No cold sores, no genital herpes.

Do I have cold sores OR herpes?

Hate to brake it to you guys...cold sores ARE herpes. There are different types, but a cold sore on your lip can easily become herpes on someones genitals.

It's interesting the stigma that exists around herpes on gential, but not as much around herpes of the mouth.

Probably more people would have genital herpes, had they not gotten oral "cold sores" at a young age.

What?! I can give her herpes from giving her a blow job if I have a cold sore?! I've made out with her a million times while having a cold sore outbreak and it's never given her a cold sore.

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. My boyfriend gets them. He's spread the virus to me but it's living in my throat instead of the more normal lips. He does not give me oral sex when he's got a cold sore. I don't need sores on my genitals too.

and yes of course i'm careful ... more
Cold sores are herpes simplex virus (HSV) 1. I'm not sure of the stats for men, but 80-90% of women between 14-49 have the virus. HSV-2 is generally what causes genital herpes. 1 in 5 women have the virus. 85% do not know because they have no symptoms or the symptoms are extremely mild. HSV-1 can cause sores on the genitals (via oral sex), and type 2 can be transmitted to the mouth, but when this happens, recurrent outbreaks are less likely and symptoms tend to be less severe. Type 1 cannot turn into Type 2 and vice versa. Although there is a huge amount of social stigma around Type 2, the truth is, the viruses are nearly identical under a microscope, the symptoms are pretty much the same, and type can only be definitively diagnosed with testing. The main difference between them is their "site of preference" and that HSV-2 tends to have more outbreaks.

Also cool little fact,
If you have contracted one of the herpes strains you have a 45% chance ... more
The part about a 45% chance of not contracting the other strain is inaccurate. It used to be thought true, but more recent studies have indicated otherwise. It does seem, however, that having one reduces the severity of symptoms if a person contracts the other type as well.

Most people (at least 2/3, with many estimates of 85%) never know they have HSV 1 and/or 2. So, never having symptoms does not mean a person does not have it.

Although the virus stays with you for life, the good thing is that the first outbreak is usually the worse and they often dramatically decrease in frequency and intensity over time.

I get cold sores when my immune system is run down, and once in reaction to sunburn. I really hate it, but I never perform oral sex until its healed, as I care about my sexual partners.
