I have been so lucky in my life. I have never had anyone I know get diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. I pray this continues as it means me and my friends/family/loved ones will not be adding to the statistics.

I'm sure some of the people I've known were positive and just didn't broadcast the information. In fact, in high school PEL (political, economic, and legal) class, we learned that someone at our very tiny school was HIV positive and it was something the administration had to know for safety reasons but could not to disclose to any students, parents, other unnecessary staff members. So I know there was a kid at my school but never learned who it was.

I've seen a documentary on AIDS years ago and it was mighty depressing learning the history of such a horrible condition. But the people absolutely astound me with their strength and the keep-on-truckin' attitude.

I worked for a rehabilitation center and knew quite a few young girls there who were HIV positive. Makes you look at things differently. You would never know by looking at them. Most of them were prostitutes at some point. Very young girls, it's really sad that most were forced into this and now they have to seal with a terrible disease like this.

I knew someone a long time ago, he is no longer with us. Other then that, all of my friends and family have been lucky so far.

To my knowledge no one I know now is HIV+/has AIDS, but I volunteered at an AIDS crisis center for a number of years so I knew people in the past with the disease. The disease itself is horrible, but worse is the ostracism so many of the sufferers are faced with from family and friends.

Hanging out in the Leather bar in town I have met many people who were affected by the crisis, or were around when it hit. It's both inspiring and devastating to hear their stories of how the community banded together to care for their own, and the impact it had on the community.

I'm an HIV Pharmacist so this disease affects me personally. I love my job and my patients are amazing. Actually they are our best patients and we do our best to make everything easier for them with copay assistance cards, syncing their refills , providing educational materials, and just being there to talk. They are actually our best patients.

With today's medication regimens many patients are able to live long lives. The big issue now are the side effects as most of the drugs cause diabetes and cholesterol problems. But despite all of these problems, most patients do well. There are a lot of advances in research and treatment coming so we are seeing a lot of optimism for the future.

I have a good friend who has it. It breaks my heart, but he is really responsible about it and is very on top of his treatment.
