Sex Fact: HIV and AIDS

Kayla Kayla
With World AIDS Day coming up (December 1st), learn a bit more about AIDS and its effect on the world.

- Does HIV only effect young people? No, it effects young people as well as adults. It's estimated that there were 2.5 million people under 15 living with HIV in 2009. One third of all new HIV infections are among people who are 15-24!

- How long does it take for HIV to cause AIDS? It varies. With antiretroviral drugs, the AIDS can be delayed. If someone infected with HIV does not take treatment, though, it takes about 10 years for AIDS to develop.

- Is there a cure? There is no cure yet. Doctors and scientists are working on finding one. Recently, we've figured out how to control the virus if someone is infected with HIV to stay healthier for longer, but we still have not figured out how to get rid of the virus completely.

- Are some people at greater risk for HIV than others? It is more dependant on what you do rather than who you are. Roughly half of all new HIV infections in the US are related directly or indirectly to injection drug use. Women are also twice as much likely to contract HIV through vaginal sex with infection males than the opposite.

I love posts like these; they're ultra informative and really give insight to this disease. I don't think I know anyone who is infected with HIV/AIDS but it's always possible.

thanks for this Kayla

Can I say other? My high school had at least two people who were HIV-positive but, as it should be, those two individuals were anonymous and only the administration knew in cases of emergency. So in such a tiny school, I most certainly knew them. But knew which ones they were? Nope. But it didn't matter to me to know it anyway.

Sorry to grammar/spelling nitpick, but this:

"Does HIV only effect young people? No, it effects young people as well as adults."

Should be this:

"Does HIV only affect young people? No, it affects young people as well as adults."

I don't *think* I know anyone with HIV/AIDs. Big difference in that "think". In my experience people tend to be very private about medical matters, so there is always a chance I am just not close enough to be privy to this kind of information.
