New Emergency Contraception Pill

Miss Cinnamon Miss Cinnamon
I just read about a new emergency contraception pill that received the FDA's approval today. It's similar to the current "morning after" pill (like Plan B), but where Plan B needs to be taken within 72 hours, this new pill, named Ella, will be effective if taken within 120 hours, or 5 days, of unprotected sex.

My thoughts are pretty much "Hooray!" What are your reactions to this news?

I'm definitely in favor of ECPs. I'm lucky enough to live in a liberal state, where contraceptives and ECPs are available, but my worry is still for those in places where they can be denied these kinds of medications. While it's definitely a bonus for those women, because it gives them more time to find a place that will prescribe/fill it, the underlying problem still exists and I find that super depressing.

I also wonder why I hadn't heard of this, before now, usually the media is all over new medications even before the FDA approves it.

Very much, "Horray!"

that's excellent. I've had to use the morning after pill before, but worry if people find out they can now wait up to five days they may get lax and forget about it. But perhaps that's only because Im so forgetful and un organised.

FANTASTIC!!!! I hope it goes over the counter as soon as it is released! Tine is of the essence during Morning After Pill use, and waiting for a Doctor's call, waiting for the nurse to get back to you, waiting for the medications to be called in can waste time.

5 days beats 72 hours. I'd like to do some research and see if it is just progesterone (less side effects) or a combination estrogen/progesterone, which can cause nausea, GI problems, headaches, severe bloating and mood issues.

I had to use the Morning After Pill once. We were new to anal sex, and didn't know the ropes, and he THOUGHT he was in the back door, and was actually PIV. He came (we use withdrawal as a birth control.) and as soon as I realized what happened I freaked out. Luckily, in our state pharmacists HAVE TO sell you Plan B, or they will lose their license, so it is easy to get. I went out and got it that morning and got my period on time. MUCH releif.

I've also bought it for one of my older kid's when she experienced a broken condom with her boyfriend at the time, and had just gone off the pill. It was a HUGE relief to know we had that choice, and as these experiences happened within a few months of each other, it was nice to not be breeding at the same time. I am FINISHED having babies, and she isn't ready.

The freedom to have choice in this matter is so empowering.

Probably it hasn't hit the news because it still isn't approved. It could be months or even years, if the people who won't keep their law off my body start trouble.

These medications are NOT "abortions." They prevent ovulation, and make the uterus hostile to implantation, as a secondary way of preventing pregnancy. Pregnancy is the IMPLANT ION of a fertilized egg in the wall of the uterus, so without implantation, medically, the woman is not pregnant.

I am sure the excrement will hit the rotating oscillator when the news is popular.

Glad to hear about this
Hopefully the side effects are similiar to Plan B or less mild.

Awesome! I think that's great for just in case you forget or can't take it right away, this gives you more leeway.

I didn't really hear about it before this either, but now there's pretty decent news coverage of it. The NYT article provides a bit more information on the new pill.

As for those who are hoping for over-the-counter availability, it looks like the new ECP is going to be prescription only for the time being

I still would prefer plan be since it has to be taken sooner. I wouldn't wanna take the chance and wait a few more days before taking something

With the New Guard in DC, we'll be lucky to still have Plan B. I don't see any new ones being approved OTC, soon, unless people really raise a strong need for it. (And we DO need it.)

The Tea Party not only wants us to have NO access to BC, especially "Morning After" birth control, but they want to abolish the Department of Education. So, then we'll all have children we can't afford and aren't ready for, and have NO public education for them, if that is what we choose.

I hope their plans keep as FAR away from MY uterus as possible!
