Sleeping with a tampon?

Contributor: link82 link82
Even though women know the risk of TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome), so many still sleep with a tampon in. While I use one throughout the day, I never sleep with one in and always wear a pad or liner to bed. What about you?

I dont get why the oh well part was needed to the first one. I know the risks but I also dont sleep for 15 OR so hours in the day so it is not like it is in there for a very long time. I shower daily, and am very hygienic so I don't see myself every having a problem with tss. Ive never heard people freak out about sleeping with tampons in till I joined EF. I always thought it was normal, every woman I know sleeps with tampons in. But that's people I know. It's so strange to me that people freak out about it.

I usually try not to but that has more to do with getting too dried out and not so much about worry over TSS.

I will if my flow is heavy. A pad just doesn't cut it at times. I agree with Starkiller87, I sleep for about 6 hours and clean often.

I sleep with a tampon if I know I will not be sleeping more than 7 hours or so. I think the maximum time you should keep a tampon in is 8 hours, so as long as I am under that I will wear one (I tend not to sleep much during school). I don't usually have trouble with leaks when I wear one at night because I am laying down.

After having my stillbirth, and having to wear pads for like two weeks I swore I'd never wear a pad again. So I haven't. I only use tampons, but for the last six months I've been on the shot, which means I don't have a period at all. Which is kind of amazing to me!

I'll also say that I've never slept through the night, and usually when I wake up in the middle of the night to pee, I change my tampon, but I don't sleep more than 8 hours.

I dislike wearing tampons period, so if I have to wear one I'll still take it out before bed. During the week I don't sleep for really long periods of time, but on the weekends I do and for me personally, I'd be more comfortable sleeping with wadded up toilet paper acting as a pad lol.

I use to when I used tampons, but I don't touch them any more. I'll only use a Diva cup!

Tampons have been greatly improved over the decades and are perfectly fine to wear for eight hours at a time, but no longer than that. I have had a number of issues with tampons and haven't used them in years, so it's not a concern for me either way. I do want to try those RepHresh tampons during my next cycle, but I still wouldn't sleep with it in, because I sleep for more than eight hours.

I hardly ever use tampons, only when I need the extra protection if I'm going on a long road trip and double up with a tampon and a pad. But I once fell asleep with a tampon in after reading about TSS ( of course during my first period ) and thought my vagina would crumble up and die. Seriously ran to the bathroom half asleep fearing for my vaginas life because I thought it would have swallowed the tampon right up. . . I was very imaginative in the horrors of woman hood when I was younger, and still am. lol.

But yeah, the whole TSS thing makes me fearful of tampons.

I use a DivaCup now but when I used tampons I always slept with them in. Pads were way too uncomfortable, I'd never be able to fall asleep with one. Plus then I'd wake up all a mess and have to have a shower, which I don't always have time for in the morning.

I use soft cups so I can go 12 hours before changing it. I hate tampons at night because I have to wake up in the middle of the night just to change it so it wont leak.

I do, but only because I have super heavy flow for just a few days on my cycle! I figure that the risk isn't too high since it's only maybe 4 nights and pads gross me out!

Instructions say change every four to six hours, I never sleep more than that. Pads really gross me out, I can never feel clean wearing them.

I have issues using tampons as it is so I never sleep with them in. If I even use a tampon I rarely have it in for longer than an hour or two.

I used to sleep in tampons, and never had any problem. I no longer do because I now use a menstrual cup, so I sleep with that in instead.

I don't even use tampons. I'm deathly scared of them, I always feel like its going to get lost. Or, I'm not going to be able to take it out. I just stay way from them. If I did wear them, i wouldn't sleep with them in.

Tampons used to intimidate me as well. When I was young, I was more worried they would be uncomfortable. There is no conceivable way for a tampon to get lost. Your vagina comes to an end where your cervix begins. A tampon is way too large to pass beyond that. As for not being able to get it out, it only takes a small tug of the string to remove it. Even if the string broke (which doesn't happen often), you can just reach in with your fingers and grab it.

As Sapphire Storm mentioned, today's tampons are much safer. However, I feel more better wearing a pad most of the time. It's just a comfort thing. I've used tampons in the past without issues though.

me too, but i use the mooncup. tampons are expensive, a hassle, and so messy. i used to hate peeing on the string and having its cold wetness touching my legs... or worse, wiping and getting it stuck up my ass... with dirt on it! EW.

MoonCups are so much simpler for me. and i can always keep it with me, even when camping. and i'll never have to buy another until 10 years from now.
what's not to love?

Pads *always* leak in my sleep. I understand the danger, but I still sleep with a tampon. I set my alarm so that I would wake up in no more than 8 hours and change it. A couple of times I overslept, but thankfully nothing happened.

When I used to use tampons I slept with them in just fine. It's rare that I sleep eight hours. Now I sleep with my Diva Cup in and I find it much more comfortable than a tampon.

I just don't like pads but I use a panty liner at the end of my period.

I'll only sleep with a tampon if I put it in just before bed. Usually, I use pads. I've been thinking about switching to the cups. It's a pain in the ass when you don't have pads or tampons on hand.

You know, it seems like something EF should carry. It does have a bit to do with "sexual health". I'd buy one . . . and then 15 more.
