Naked Reader Book Club Discussion: The Ultimate Guide to Cunnilingus and The Ultimate Guide to Fellatio

Contributor: Kristina Wright Kristina Wright
Welcome to this week's Naked Reader Book Club Discussion! June is Oral Sex Month and this week we're discussing The Ultimate Guide to Cunnilingus and The Ultimate Guide to Fellatio, both by the incomparable Violet Blue.

These guides are considered the "ultimate" because of their in-depth coverage of the topic of giving oral pleasure. Far more than the bulleted lists of tips and tricks that can be found in any women's (or men's) magazines, Violet explores the topic of going down on your partner from ALL angles. What's not to love, right?

So I ask you, dear readers, what's your opinion of how-to sex guides? Do you read them? Share them with your partner? Bookmark pages in an attempt to get that much needed attention you crave? Can you really get an education in giving "mind-blowing pleasure" from a book?

If you've read one or both of Violet's guides, what did you think? Was there a piece of advice that you found eye-opening or particularly helpful? Better yet, were you able to successfully apply Violet's advice or suggestions?

Whether you've read Violet Blue's guides or are thinking about ordering them and want more information, I invite you to drop in and share your opinion or ask a question about the topic of going down!

I was blown away by just how much information was packed into The Ultimate Guide to Fellatio. I honestly don't think there's anything she neglected to mention.

I have not read these two, but I will be adding them to my wishlist. I have read how too books, and I really enjoy them. I think a lot of times that it is important and I get a lot of great information out of them.

One thing I would love to see more often... An appealing how to book for a man to read. I must say I do not see my man running to grab up the latest how to book. What can an author do to spice it up enough for the male audience to enjoy as well?

I like how to books because I can learn new techniques and information I may not have previously known from them. Generally my partner doesn't read how to books with me, however I'll read out loud or tell him about parts I find particularly interesting. I also really enjoyed how Violet Blue broke up some of the chapters with short erotic stories by Alison Tyler, I thought this was a really nice touch. Sometimes how to books can be a little dry, but the little bits of erotica helped to keep me interested

It is a pretty comprehensive guide, isn't it? Was there anything in particular that you found helpful?

I'm always picking up self-help books of all kinds and skimming them or reading only select parts, but I found Violet's guides to be cover-to-cover reads. What did you think?

Have not read the books but we both enjoy giving and receiving oral sex!

I noticed that this woman wrote both sides of the story. You know, I mean she wrote from the man and woman point of view. How did she discover the male side? Does anyone know if there is specific information in the book about interviews?

Oh.... oh oh! There is a touch of erotica too? Wow. This is a must have.

I book that I just love is 302 Advanced Techniques to driving your man wild in bed. It was very informative about oral techniques. I have tried some and they actually help a lot.

I really liked the section about the Anatomy of a Male's cycle and how the For Him chapter was kind of a companion to this chapter directed at a male audience.

yes, but men usually aren't interested in a plain straight forward instruction book. But this one also has erotica tied in. I think that is very helpful in making it more fun and readable.

Totally hear ya. I have been there with my man. Woo... it is crazy. And it is insane how different spots give him a completely different sensation.

The Before You Go Down chapter and the Going Down chapter were full of great pointers, some of which I bookmarked to go back to later. It's hard to choose which chapters stood out, because I enjoyed something in each of the sections and I think the author did a good job at keeping the information both interesting and informative.

I am a big Violet Blue fan, and both (well, honestly, all) of her books are on my reading list. While I am yet to read these, I do highly recommend sex how-to books. I've found them to be helpful in many ways:

1. Bringing up new ideas with a partner.
Sometimes it can be tricky navigating those waters, particularly in a new relationship. If you are shy about a subject or don't know how to ask for something new (telling someone they are bad at what they give you is an outright danger zone!), it can be easier to open the book and simply ask, "what do you think about this?"

2. Books can offer a missing link to the conversation you aren't having.
I've never been the kind of person that can talk candidly with my friends about sex (but strangers? no problem!). I feel that there is a lot that I am missing from that, ranging from anecdotes and on up to explanations of en vogue sexual terms. Alternately, sometimes you may have a partner that is just not vocal about what they want, and it can be very hard to improve or target their preferences without that communication. How-to books can offer that bridge.
When I was younger, I had trouble getting anywhere with my male partners--to them, everything was 'great'. But I could tell certain touches just did not ring as loudly as others. After research about mind-blowing handjobs, I knew what signs to look for, interesting maneuvers and also just the basic understanding that what works for one man may not work for another--it didn't mean I was 'doing it wrong', just that I needed to refocus. If a how-to book only offers you a sense of self-confidence in any arena you have questions with, that book has done its job.

3. I hardly need an excuse to read about sex.
I think about it all the time. I might as well read and try to pick up new tips.

If they made directions for DVD Players etc., with erotica maybe they would read them first!

There were little blurbs throughout the book that included a male's perspective on different things. It also states in the Acknowledgments that "the book contains the voices of (literally) hundreds of people who responded to postings, queries, and a questionnaire.

I love #3!

You are absolutely right on all counts. We research everything from the best educational toys for our children to the highest safety rated cars-- why shouldn't we read and learn more about one of the most significant parts of our adult lives?

That's really a good question (and thanks for providing the answer). I think it would be possible to write a "how-to" guide on any topic, regardless of gender, without considering the opinions of a wide audience. These guides are a compilation of Violet's extensive research and provide the reader with a wide variety of ideas and suggestions.
