Naked Reader Book Club Discussion: FRENZY, edited by Alison Tyler (7-11 PM EST)

Contributor: Kristina Wright Kristina Wright
Hi and welcome to this week's Naked Reader Book Club discussion! I'm Kristina Wright, your book club moderator. Tonight's chat will start at 7 PM EST and we will be discussing Alison Tyler's anthology FRENZY: 60 Stories of Sudden Sex. Here is a brief description of the book:

What happens when desire trumps restraint, and a seemingly innocent glance triggers a red-hot, clothes-in-a-heap quickie? Short in length but long on arousal, the stories in this collection take pace anywhere, any time the mood strikes. In Frenzy, editor Alison Tyler offers an unabashedly lustful selection of "brief encounters" of the sexual kind.

So, let's talk about quickies-- stories and sex! Ms. Tyler has compiled quite a diverse collection of short tales to highlight the joys of "sudden sex." If you've read the book, feel free to share your favorite stories in the collection. What made them stand out? Did you discover any new favorite authors among these bite-sized bits of erotica? Were you "inspired" by any of the scenarios to try recreate a "brief encounter" of your own?

Whether you've had a chance to pick up a copy of Frenzy or not, do you prefer your stories of the realistic, do-it-yourself variety or do you turn to erotica for a fantasy escape from reality? Or both? On the sensual side, do you have a favorite quickie anecdote? Share it with the frisky crowd in the forum or just stop in for naughty confessionals and cautionary tales!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to kick off the discussion with a snippet from Alison's introduction that struck me as poetic and sexy. She says:

"There is just something so damn sexy to me about frenzied fucking-- I mean, frenzied fiction. Not only do I enjoy penning particles of porn, I adore reading them."

"...particles of porn..." I just love that description of these 60 short-short erotic stories. You know exactly what you're getting when you hear that phrase, just as you know exactly what you're getting when you hear the word "quickie."

There is something just delicious about that kind of quicksilver passion, either in fiction or real life, don't you think?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on FRENZY!

Yes, Julia... the discussion sometimes takes a little while to get going, but I promise there will be a frenzy of activity shortly! (I wonder if a lot of our readers are on the west coast and still at work? I'm on the east coast.)

I enjoy the frenzied sex, it makes me feel as though my fiance and I can never get enough of each other.

I was surprised by the book. I enjoyed quite a few of the different stories, and it was enjoyable to read. Now I'm hooked on erotica even.

Being hooked on erotica is so much healthier than other things.

What surprised you about the book?

I was expecting a lot of the stories to be a lot shorter. I honestly have to admit that I'm not fond of short stories - like at all. Not just this book, but in all of the books. I think part of the charm of erotica is getting to know the characters' personalities and situations before the action gets on, and I miss out on that with paragraph-long stories.

The really short ones reminded me of the twitterotica contest we've been running. You really distill the language down to the bar minimum of what it takes to create the image you want. Maybe the challenge is more fun for the writer than the reader?

True. But in a book made for the reader, it's just not something I appreciate. I guess I do appreciate the artistic value of it, but it just isn't arousing to me.

I prefer stories that are a bit longer to let us get to know the characters too. I just can't get as into it if I can't create the people and situation in my head, lol

Haha, I got confused on the time difference, too. Sorry I'm late!

Jumping in.. I like 'shorter' short stories (as can be told from my own twitterotica fascination). I suppose it does come down to what an individual person likes for themselves, but a good writer should be able to give their readers satisfaction, regardless of length.

I remember a couple of years ago when it was all the 'writer's rage' to write super short stories, limited to exactly 50 words. The goal was to create as comprehensive and complete a story within that. It can be amazing what a person can come up with in that amount of time!

I totally got confused on the time difference too. I thought I was going to be extremely early. I think I remember that 50-word thing too. I still just don't like reading stories like that. There's something about getting to know the characters that makes it worth reading for me.

I find that very interesting. I am the opposite--I write and most enjoy stories that are split down to the bare pronouns. It is easier for me to put myself in those shoes that way.

Hmmm. That's neat. I know Cleis Press has a couple 60-second erotica stories books. I think you'd like those.

Do you know which title? I am slowly gathering pennies to make my first Cleis Press purchase (I know, I know--and I love participating in this club, too). I would love to check that book out!

So if I understand well, the concept of Frenzy is pushed to the limit, and the quickies described are presented in a very short way as well?

Well frenzy was what I could get when I could have sex with my ex. I have to concede that even though we had sex once a month, it was a pretty intense 15-20 min.

I'm such an erotica addict now. I plan on even sneaking some home to keep up on my reading when I go back to visit the parents. It's sad really.

And it's called "Got a Minute: Sixty Second Erotica".
link

If I remember correctly, that's not the first 60-second book Cleis Press has released, so you might have to dig around a bit. If I had to guess though, either Rachel Kramer or Alison Tyler would have edited it.

Some of them. I didn't feel like most of them were too short. I felt like most of them, while "being frenzied" still took their time in the pages to get down to the sex. Now the sex - that part felt "frenzied". Not in the actual writing, but in what the characters did.

I may not like my stories to be that short, but that they don't beat too much around the bush.

I think I feel like, when stories are that short, they are mostly abstract and not actual actions like I prefer too.

I like some details, even if the sex is frenzied. I personally need more explicit details than just getting off from the setting.

I enjoy shorter stories that are raw and to the point. Give me straight up passion and emotion, and I'm hooked! But I can also appreciate longer stories, if the author is able to properly develop the characters and story line.

I'm curious, for those that were able to read, what were your favorite stories like in this book? What made them your favorite?
