Interesting, Lori. I'll be interested in hearing Cole's male perspective. I wonder if the reasoning and intellectualizing is something women who write about sex feel inclined to do (I do, though not as much as I used to)?

With regard to A-A erotica, do you think it's still a bit of an uphill battle to make the distinction between so-called "thug lit" and books that strive for a balance between the intellectual and provocative?

Hi Teddy. Everybody, let me introduce you to Teddy Bell, the only male contributor to Can't Help. He wrote The Sangria Seduction. He's a fabulous and sexy poet and this was his first erotic short story. I'm sure he's got a lot to say about the experience!

I think what initially grabbed me, and got me interested into Making the Hook Up at first, was the introduction. Usually they are boring and blah blah blah, and I don't care much for intros. This one however grabbed me. It was the quote that jumped out at me,
"When Black people are allowed to indulge the usual sins, the customary fetishes, and all the regular vices humans are permitted, then they will have achieved total sexual citizenship. Otherwise, they will remain trapped in the usual state stereotypes and labels the world has assigned to us."

That got me from the start. I knew this was going to be a great book, and it really was. I enjoyed just about every story inside. My favorites though would have to be Three Kisses and Pharaoh's Phallic.

Thug lit is hotties, gangsta, and drug deals. There is very little room to mess with that formula. And that is why you have all kinds of people writing books. Bad, sloppy books.

I've had this experience with my own daughter. Of course, I am her mother, so already believe her to be completely brilliant (I'm completely biased, I know), but I read an essay she wrote last year for a district-wide essay contest and I was genuinely impressed by how well she wrote, at age 11. She was selected as a finalist, so I know it's not just my skewed opinion. She's expressing herself better than many adults I know.

She will keep at it, if her pushy mom has anything to say about it.

Very much so. My last novel, Weapons of Mass Seduction, featured three women, one white, one black and one latina. It really was a discussion of how women learn to be sexal beings (or not) and explored some of the ideas about what's sexy and our roles as sexual women. Like I do in all my novels, I took that heady subject and showcased in a user-friendly read, in this case a workshop the characters took and then explored the changes in their lives after the workshop. Random House slapped a ghetto fabulous cover on it and pushed it out there with all of the other Street Lit. It was my worst selling book

I'm still fuming!

It's amazing how ironic the story Pharaoh's Phallic by Deepbronze is. I just know that one has to be a true story, I think there was a time that actually happened to me. Too funny!

I thought I would have to defend it, so I went on the offensive. I told my entire family (even the ultra-conservatives), my 87 year old grandmother, my employer. I had a string of arguments set up for any reaction. And you know what? Nobody cared because most were all erotica readers anyway. The two people I had the most trouble with were two of my best friends, and that's because they thought I was stealing their thunder for being the "freaky ones" in the friendship.

I strongly recommend Making the Hook Up. It is the first book in a long time that I could just completely indulge in. I was heated by the soulful erotica and humored by the stories that seem that they had to be true. I could picture myself in the exact situation. One of the best books I have read in a while. Now I am on to Fast Girls and Do Not Disturb.
