Should I throw this toy away after I dropped it in the shower???

Miss Cinnamon Miss Cinnamon
I'm actually a pretty clumsy person, so I'm surprised it took me this long to actually drop one of my toys in the shower while I was using it... The toy itself is undamaged, but it was a communal shower (two showers for a floor of approximately 20 girls). It's made of TPE and I scrubbed it with an antibacterial hand soap. But what do you think? Is it porous enough that a few seconds on the floor of a shower that people wear their sandals into would make it potential harmful to my body?

I just googled up some info on how long it takes for bacteria to actually soak into porous materials and from what i have read it takes about half an hour and it the item or material has to go through some usage of some sort. So, i would say keep it but that's just me. When you do think about it though it really puts a gross thought in the brain though....

It's probably safer than what you eat in most restaurants.

I think it would be safe to use but if you get in your head that it's not, best to get rid of it. But really, if you only dropped it and picked it up, probably nothing got on it that wouldn't get on/in it in your bedroom. Like Carrie Ann said, it is probably safer that what you eat in most restaurants..

If you have any reservations at all, even in the back of your mind, I would definitely throw it away.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I'm a little obsessive when it comes to cleanliness. I'm notoriously messy and disorganized--but it's 99% germ free (or, at least, I like to think it is). I've dropped my toothbrush in there before and kept using it (after a good scrubbing), so it stands to reason that this toy is still fully OK to use. I still think I'll leave it in the toy box for a few days/weeks/months and pull it back out after I forget that I dropped it at all

Antibacterial soap and if you have any doubts, try hydrogen peroxide -it kills staph and most bacteria. If there is any staph or blood present it will foam. Hibiclens can be purchased at many pharmacies and it is one of the scrubs we use in the operating room. Wash that off well too, it can be an irritant internally. Betadine can stain but boy does it kill bacteria and so does vinegar.!!! Any doubts left put a condom on it. You are exposed to more bacteria sitting on a gym bench (you can wick up bacteria through moist clothing, swimming pools and the ocean.

I also recommend hydrogen peroxide, should kill anything that might of transferred onto it.

10% bleach solution spray should also do the trick, or you can always put a condom on it. It also makes them easier to clean later.

Hydrogen peroxide is a great idea, because the foaming will let you know if there's anything on it. If it's a porous toy, and it's valuable enough to justify the expense, you could get a UV disinfectant wand. Those will sterilize anything, including bedding, just be responsible and don't try to use it to disinfect your body.

Poor gasoline over it and set it ablaze. It'll kill any bacteria.

Although this might affect the performance of the toy somewhat.

Red Roulette, you crack me up X]

Actually, I'm pretty sure that if I dipped a glass toy in ethanol and then set it on fire, that would actually work pretty well. Of course, if it were a glass toy, I would be more worried about chips or fractures from the drop than any bacteria, since glass can easily be sterilized.

One of these days, I'm going to smuggle sex toys into an empty chemistry lab and take pictures of them doing science-y things.

OMGOSH! You just gave me such terrible ideas.

I already get giggled at for my lube microbiology experiments, this is going to even more awesome.

To put this in perspective (very late, but still):

How many times have you touched the walls of the shower or the floor with your hands?

What did you feel compelled to do with your hands before masturbating with them again? Probably wash them well. Seriously doubting you dipped them in alcohol and set them on fire.

The bugs that you need to be careful of are spread predominantly by human-human contact involving body fluids. Some are spread by other means, but most of them aren't going to be a big problem from shower contact. I would recommend a wash before using the toy again, but remember that your skin is also porous.

I would also like to add that as of lately Staph has gotten a bad rap in the bug world. However, there are many different kinds of staph, many of which make up our own normal flora. Simply seeing the foam of peroxide does not indicate that you have picked up infectious bacteria.

I actually never touch the walls or floor of public showers if I can help it. I'm such a germophobe -_- Human skin cells also naturally release enzymes that break down the genetic bits of some types of microbes as part of the immune system, a feature that my dropped toy didn't have. But I get your point

A year later, I can say that the toy has been used again, though infrequently, and everything seems to be fine

Sounds like you were cautious with it so it should be good to keep using.

It doesn't even mean that you've picked up bacteria - merely that you've picked up something that's decomposing the peroxide.

Is there any research on how much chemical could be retained by a porous dildo? Peroxide can be nasty stuff, as can other disinfectants.

LOL! Love that!!

HP will work. I use HP to clean my toilets, so why not my toys?

Peroxide is a great idea. It will foam if there is bacteria on the toy?? I should invest in a bottle.
