I am an avid cunning linguist and my experience tells me it varies between women based on their diet, their usual hygiene, and what they've been up to that day. In general with the women I've been with I've been lucky enough that they taste great no matter what they've been up to (I used to pick one up from competitive dance training and not think twice about going down on her). Although it definitely is appreciated when you have a pre-fun shower.

Although there are some women who smell and taste terrible no matter how much you shower. (almost always due to choice of diet)

I'd say shower if it's been quite a long time since you've had one, though it definitely depends whether she has a natural scent that you prefer.

Augh, I would never make my partner even touch me without at least a quick cleanup, though we're a very hygienic couple. Male or female, I think you should always clean first.

I feel better if I had a shower first. But as long as you shower like a normal person and keep yourself clean, it shouldn't be a huge deal if not.

It totally depends on the situation. Me and my gf would go hiking and then come home horny as could be....I loved the smell of her sweat and wetness and finally got her to let me taste her before a shower...and it was ahhhhhmazing Then there are times where we are both like "yeah...shower time" It is up to both parties involved. I also know a friend who always showers before her husband can do that to her....because she feels very uncomfortable and has been lead to believe any smell or taste is bad...poor guy, he wants to taste and smell her...it is natural.

If you're dirty or smell down there, then sure, it's the polite thing to do. But that doesn't always HAVE TO happen. I like spontaneity as well. I keep clean down there in any case, so it shouldn't be a problem for him.
