Couple just starting w/ toys: What do you consider the "basics" for the toy box?

There are quite a few glass pieces that are quite inexpensive I'm not sure if they still have the sale going on, but there were glass pieces for under $10 (regular price $30).

I'd say a staple is lubricants. As for toys, I guess that all really depends on your preferences.

Silicone is my material of choice. Also, for those just starting out, glass and steel toys can be unforgiving. They are hard and have to be used gently until you get the hang of them. We are very similar to you, both in terms of age, size and coming to toys after many years. We echo what a couple of people have said. Truly, check out the Liberator cushions that are on here(wedges, ramps), they changed our lives, without exxageration.
