Just by length I'd say the larger side of things. Girth is also important to me, though, when deciding whether it's small or big.

Estimates in diameter can vary quite a bit from the actual size (being 1/4 inch off could make over 3/4 inch difference in circumference, what many/all comparisons use). If you have a tape measure you can use that to measure around, or get some string, measure around and mark start/end point of a ring around it, then straighten the string and use a ruler.

Much more accurate, considering 3.14in vs 4.71in in circumference is a very large gap...
