My exercise routines vary from an hour to two hours, and I like to use the Smartballs while I exercise since I'm moving around already. Some days I will also leave them in for trips to the store or quick outings when I know I'll be home soon. I am kind of small, so I have no fear of anything falling out. So maybe, at an hour a day sometimes reaching three hours.
Remember that you benefit faster if you actually squeeze around the Smartballs too. Yes, they help workout automatically, but the squeezing helps you with awareness and control.
Since I started kegel exercises I noticed a huge difference, and my partner commented relatively quickly which means he noticed too. You are able to make things REALLY tight when you want to, or once you get serious control you can flutter which feels pretty awesome.
