I find that using it directly on my clit is too intense for me so I use it with attachments like the Gee whizzard. link
It's nice because this allows you to use it as dildo and while it's inserted the cap part that goes over the end of the Hitachi will press up against the clit and provide extra stimulation.

You could use it either way. It's an external vibrator, but there's nothing that says you can't use a dildo at the same time (the same holds true for any clit vibe, really). And like GirlOnGirl said, there's attachments you can use to make the Hitachi more versatile.
Since you're new with toys, just keep in mind that the Hitachi is very strong, even on the lower setting. If there's a place near you that sells them (sex shops often have the Hitachi, and some pharmacies still sell it under its original purpose as a back massager) you might ask if you can plug one in to see how strong the vibrations are. That way you'd know before you ordered.

It's definitely possible to use the Hitachi on your clitoris while using a dildo but I just usually use the Hitachi on my clitoris without any other toys or stimulation involved because the Hitachi is so intense. I can sometimes end up squirting just using it on my clitoris too so any added stimulation for me would be too distracting I think.

Really, just use it however you want to use it. When you get it, move it around and see where it feels the best. Then you can also add things to your holes while holding the Hitachi on your body somewhere (externally) and see how that feels. It's trial and error because every body is different.

As other people have said, the Hitachi is crazy strong, but don't let that scare you away. It's one of the most popular and world-renowned sex toys for a reason: it produces some of the most powerful, deep, rumbly vibrations of any toy on the market (for a relatively low price too). Give it a shot with or without penetration and you'll almost certainly enjoy it.

the Hitachi is too strong for my wife. She loves the rechargeable fairy wand. You can control the vibrations on it. She uses it directly on her clit. And sometimes I will use the pure wand on her g-spot while she uses the fairy. It works pretty well.
