When you bought your first sex toy in person how did you feel?

If you bought your first sex toy ever in person, how did you feel as you bought it? I'm just curious as to how everyone felt.

I bought my first sex toy when I was twenty-one, I was out of my parent's house and on my own. I went to a local store that actually had coupons from a college coupon book.

When I went in, it was very well lit, very clean. As soon as I entered I was greeted with a cheery hello. I was only inside for a few minutes before a salesperson approached me.

I managed to squeak out, "Where are the vibrators?" And he took me right over to them.

He asked, "Can I help you with something in particular?"

I stammered out, "I don't know, ummm I just want to look right now." In reality, I was too embarrassed to ask someone of the opposite gender.

I was shocked and awed at how many there were, and all the different varieties. I was extremely daunted. How on Earth would I pick one?

A few minutes later, a female associate approached me and asked me if I needed any help. Since we were the same gender, I explained how my fingers weren't enough to make me orgasm, and I wasn't sure if I ever had orgasmed. I explained I didn't have a boyfriend, and I had this need, that I needed to fill. I explained I didn't have tons of money. I felt so embarrassed and was actually close to tears.

The sales associate said, "Relax, what you are feeling is perfectly natural. There's nothing wrong with sexual desire. I felt the same way you did when I bought my first one."

She seemed sincere, which made me feel a lot better. She showed me three models, all around the same price (under $20) and she explained a lot of details in an easy to understand way. She spent a long time helping me.

Once it came time to go up to the register, I felt all embarrassed and ill at ease again. The cashier acted nonchalant like someone buying a vibrator happened all the time. (Which of course at that store it would.) And as she rang me up she just spoke of commonplace things.

I've went back to that store several times of the years, and I'm no longer embarrassed to go in there and ask for help.

I was so super excited for my first time! It was fun and my first toy was glass

I was 18 and we both bought the same kind of toy (I got swirls and nubs, she got just nubs heh) but the manager was the only one there and we were friends (plus she was a very sex positive woman) so I felt completely comfortable.

The only time I've ever purchased things in person I've been with girlfriends, so I was okay with it then. We were buying stuff for a bridal party too, so maybe that took off some of the nervousness! Although, I did buy my best friend a Kama Sutra book, and the guy at the bookstore was totally laughing and smirking at me. It was incredibly RUDE!

Absolutely panicked that I would see someone I was acquainted with.

I went to a quality store, so the service there was good, but going in and out, and then worrying that someone I knew would come up and look in the windows just in case someone they knew was in there...

Same here. I even parked a couple of blocks away just to make sure nobody seen my car in front. It was one of a kind type of car so anybody that seen it would know I was there.

Turned out good in the end though.

I was wildly excited and when I reviewed the rabbit toy I bought I was almost obnoxiously giddy! LOL

I was so nervous I wore an old toque and scarf (it was winter) so that no one would recognize me as I walked out.

I choose other because I wasn't really nervous but mostly embarrassed and overwhelmed because I wasn't sure what I wanted and there was sooo much in there. The fact that there was no one in the store but a very large bouncer looking dude who checked id's at the door and sat behind the counter the remainder of the time watching me didn't help.

Wasn't til I had made my selections I realized there was a back section to the shop and yeah they had live shows going on back there. After realizing that's where all the other shoppers were I was more then ready to leave but hung around a bit cuz lawd that huge guy at the door had to check me out lol

Once I got up enough nerve he ended up being really nice and he figured it was my first vibrator and since color not what I needed seemed to be my driving factor he suggested a different one for me. I bought both cuz I just wanted to leave. He was right.

When I did go back he remembered me. Course the second time I was with my hubby (boyfriend at the time) and when I asked him what was worth buying he just laughed at hubby's expression then pointed out some handcuffs telling hubby he might need them for me. Poor guy he got that one wrong but it was a lot of fun cuffing hubby!

Now I don't go as often with the internet but I really do prefer seeing things in person to buying online.

I wore a disguise and went at 4am. In a borrowed car that I parked next door to the place. Sadly, I'm not exaggerating. I've since been to plenty of places while on road trips, and managed to not be a complete paranoid freak. I always get a little bit of an adrenaline rush, but now it's more like a cheap thrill instead of full blown panic. I just wish we had a place in my region that actually carried something interesting. It's not worth an hour drive to look at a small selection of toys in a store primarily dealing in "tobacco pipes" and incense.

I didn't feel terribly awkward, I'd bought toys online before, and I'd even been into this store with a friend before just browsing. It was a little strange as the clerk was of the opposite sex and seemed a little overzealous to help me and my SO pick a vibrator. Add a terrible redneck accent to the clerk and it got almost funny, very uncomfortable for SO though, he's not really into sex toys or talking about sex.

I only started buying toys a few weeks ago using Eden Fantasy. I don't see a need in going to a store. This site is so helpful and convenient. I will be a loyal patron.

Yay, I'm pleased to see that my first topic actually has had several people respond!

In addition to my original post. I've gotten confident enough that I've escorted friends that are extremely nervous, and helped them out in the store and calmed them down.

I've been in lots of sex stores and I love to browse, but I only buy online. It curbs my "buying on impulse" impulse. I like shopping online because the reviews are just really really helpful. The consensus usually turns out to be pretty right on. :]

I was nervous a little bit, but it REALLY turned me on. It was like a million ideas flooding my head at once. Now the local toy store I visit on occasion (which is even more rare now I have a kiddo that I can't take in there with me) I chat up the girl working at the register and ask her opinions on stuff.

I would have never done that - I was worried that the tote I had it in would break or someone would somehow see it, and I would have been the same way in the car.

I felt like I knew what I was shopping for, but I was totally clueless.

Now when I enter a sex shop, I have a hard time leaving.

The first toy I bought ever was the first toy I bought in person. It was just a very simple vibrating cock ring. It was one of those cheap one use ones (30 minutes and it shut off, no way to replace the batteries). The two girls working were young (mid 20s if that) and just ignored us while we walked around. I was super nervous even though I was with the boyfriend and didn't end up looking at much while we were there.

I can't say my in person experiences are any less nervous or the people any more helpful even now though so I usually buy most of my toys online.

I bought a strap-on harness with my husband. Honestly, I felt fine, but for some reason I felt the urge to defend my husband's masculinity, hahaha. Like the chick working at Castle actually gives a damn.

Did anyone else think "the other sex must have it easy"? There was definitely a certain amount of "because I'm a man someone's going to think I'm perverted and out to rape small children, but if I were a woman there wouldn't be this problem because woman are thought of as pure and wholesome..."

Stupid, but true. Still get the same thoughts (to a degree) about "embarrassing" items in drugstores.

I was so freaking nervous. I was like, 17 and my boyfriend at the time and I were in Spencers looking at vibrators like we were pretending to buy them as a gag gift, lol.

I was all mixed up LOL aroused, nervous and excited! I got 2 kinds, a realistic vibrator and a non-realistic ribbed vibrator. I was totally not knowledgeable about sex toys then and thinking back on it I doubt anyone in the store could have answered any questions I may have had. It's too bad

I think men have it easier. First, we have that whole Madonna-whore complex where any action we take sexually is automatically wrong. Have sex, and you're a slut. Stay a "good girl" and you're a frigid bitch. Go into a sex shop to buy a toy, and you're a slut for wanting sex and a frigid bitch for not getting it from a man. And if that's not enough, we get to worry about getting raped, especially if we're "asking for it" by crossing a dark parking lot alone or something.

Very nervous at 1st, with hubby by my side. He took me to the famous Pink Pussycat in the Village, NYC. He made such a nice day out of it & the salesgirl was so easygoing, that it felt like I was just shopping for a nice pair of shoes. Same excitement, no shame. Came out with a fuschia colored vibrator.
