Bring on the pain

I really enjoyed using these, but it's not for everyone. I believe that if these are used properly and explored safely and consensually, these are great for use in bdsm.

useful review
I'm a firm believer that there is a sensual side to bondage, with pain sometimes included in it, sometimes not. Whatever your practice may include, these candles belong in the pain factor.

I have had these used on me and I have used them on other people with good results in both situations when used correctly.

These candles do melt at a lower temperature and the wax cools faster than a normal candle. So please, if you're going to use hot wax I suggest you get these are made for that purpose and not try to use regular candles even if you are looking for a lot of pain. Regular candle wax can cause serious burns.

Keeping that in mind, don't think these are "mild." They still produce quite a sting and are painful. Thankfully, you can adjust the amount of pain but doing a very simple action: raise or lower the candle parallel to the body. If you want more pain, keep the candle closer to the body so the wax has less time to cool down as it falls. To reduce the pain, hold the candle far away from the body (watch your aim!) so that the wax can cool before it hits the skin.

Another difference from normal candle wax is that the wax from these candles easily peel off of the skin without snagging or tearing body hair and don't leave scald marks. Unless you want little red dots all over your body, this is a reason unto itself.

As always, use common sense and precaution. Only light the candle when you're actually going to use it. Put it out completely when done and don't leave unattended. Also, when using the candle, remember you have an open flame in your hand so watch your sleeves, hair, partner's hair, etc.

I would not recommend this for absolute beginners or for anyone looking for something "light." I would also suggest that one tests out this product before using it in a scene to gauge how appropriate the pain level would be for a given person. Remember that it will feel less painful on tougher skin such as on your arm and more painful on more sensitive areas such as the stomach or back.
Experience
I really loved to use these in conjunction with ice cubes, a blindfold and ankle/wrist restraints. Alternating between the ice and the hot wax created an enormous amount of sensory experience that drove my sub nuts!
Follow-up commentary
I can't say I've had much of a chance to use these lately but I can say that when sensual submission is on the menu for the night, this is the first product in my toy box that I think of. Nothing sets the stage like these do. One thing I've realized since my initial review is that the aesthetic quality of a lit, dripping candle is as much a part of this item's gig as the actual pain part!

Very good review with lots of excellent advice! I haven't tried hot wax play yet, so I guess this would be a bad newbie's candle, huh? I've wondered about how safe these were for the body, especially with the negative connotations that I have with the Pipedream brand. Thanks for the review.

Awesome review! This has definitely brought me some clarification on what a everyday candle does opposed to the toy that you have reviewed. I always thought sexual play candles and everyday candles were sort of the same thing.

Glad to clear up that up for you! The ingredients in the wax make all the difference. The wax in normal candles is normally designed to be dripless, so the wax is consumed at a very slow rate so that it doesn't pool at the wick. These are made to drip, so they burn fast, giving the fire less time to heat the wax before it falls. So they are different, but it still hurts!

What type of wax are these? Are they soy, paraffin, a blend, or something else?

I've been playing with melted wax since I'm a kid, so I'm waiting for a little more judgement before I get all excited

  • Painful?
    • I dont know about these, I HATE pain!
    • I hate wax-play. I'm a self-described pain slut, and even I think it's "Bad pain."
    • I've had about 2 or 3 massage candles, and the wax is never hot enough to be painful, once it's melted and poured. I'm guessing, since you can't spread normal wax, it's painful because the wax sticks to your skin and traps the heat?
