A Rippled Ride

The Tantus Ripple Large is a great silicone anal toy for intermediate or advanced players, though probably too intimidating for a complete beginner. For me, it's a good way to enjoy myself while slowly pushing my limits. I haven't yet been able to experience this toy as a butt plug, but as a probe it's a wonderful combination of smooth and surprising.

Use

The Tantus Ripple is an interesting toy-- part anal probe, part anal beads, part dildo. It can be used either anally or vaginally, though its softness and flexibility make it more suited as an anal toy. If you plan to use it both ways, be sure to sterilize it or cover it with a condom when switching from anal to vaginal to avoid spreading bacteria. Because of the softness, I don't think it would work all that well for prostate stimulation.

I found this toy worked best as a probe for solo anal play. The differently sized bulges feel wonderful going in and going out, and the flexibility makes this toy very forgiving. This is the largest toy I've used, and I wasn't able to insert the last bulge (yet) so I can't say whether or not it makes a good plug. The flared base is definitely large enough to insert it all the way safely, though.

Between the bendyness of this toy and the necessity of using lots and lots of lube (as with all butt toys) I found inserting the first bulb of this toy very awkward. For that reason, it might not be the best toy to use with a partner. Although the base is harness-compatible, it seems like it would be a pain to use with a harness (I don't have one, or I would test it out). Unless you're used to larger toys, the Ripple works better for slow exploration than fast thrusting.

Material / Texture

The Ripple is made of 100% medical grade silicone, like all Tantus toys. This means it can be sterilized by boiling, bleaching, or even running it through the dishwasher. The texture is very squishy and bendable. If I press one of the bulges between my fingers, I can see and feel it give. If I pull down on the tip of the toy, I can make it touch the base. At first this surprised me, but I think it makes insertion of the larger bulges easier.

The surface of the Ripple is completely smooth, and feels slightly tacky to the touch. It has no seam at all, and no other texture.

Design / Shape / Size

The Ripple is designed simply and well. It had four bulges of increasing size, then a thick neck, then a wide flared base. I deliberately chose a size a little too large for me, so I can work up to using the last bulge. This means I can't tell you how the base feels when in use. However, it is wide enough to be safe and seems flexible enough to be comfortable. There is only a short space between each bulge, which I liked but others may not.
The size seems like a good fit for anyone but complete beginners: because the bulges start small and increase in size, you can use as much or as little of the probe as you want at a time. I think more advanced users would like it as well because they would be able to use it more for thrusting.

The Ripple also carries vibrations well-- if you touch a vibrator to the base it can be felt all the way to the tip, though in the bottom two bulges you can feel it more.

Performance

I really like the size and placement of the bulges of this toy. They felt amazing, and even the ones that were fairly small felt intense going in and out. Rotating this toy while it's inserted gives a completely different sensation, and so does pulling it out all at once. In other words, one of its strengths is the many options it has as a probe. I also think this toy is better than a butt plug for pushing your limits a little because you can enjoy its smaller beads even before you can use the last.

It can be a little hard to control the Ripple when inserting it because of its flexibility. I found I had to hold onto the second bulb, then the third, then the fourth, rather than pushing from the base. This makes it not the best toy for playing with a partner, although if you're both patient it could still work.

According to the description, this toy can also be used with a harness, but I'm skeptical. Both the insertable part and the base are very bendy, which would make strapping it on and using it difficult. Probably not impossible, but difficult.

I haven't used this toy as a plug, but it seems more suited for masturbation or sex than long-term wear.

Care and Maintenance

The Tantus Ripple can be cleaned with toy wipes or antibacterial soap, and sterilized by boiling, bleaching, or running through the dishwasher. Because of its smoothness, this toy is very easy to clean. The packaging it came with is plastic and a little bulky for storing, but you can keep it in just about any box, bag, drawer, etc. I recommend keeping it put away where it would come into contact with lint, hair, or anything else that will stick to the silicone surface.
Because this toy is pure silicone, you should not use it with silicone lubes. Instead, use water or oil-based lube.

Thanks for the review! We were thinking about this one and Ophoria Rapture... What do you think?
  • Contributor: ladykay
Well, I haven't tried the Ophoria Rapture-- it looks like it would be a little easier to hold and control, but it's also a little larger. You probably can't go wrong with either one.

How does the flexibility work with thrusting after the insertion? It looks like it would be firm enough. Great review! Thanks!
