If it ain't broke, don't fix it

The Doc Johnson Classic Royal is a classic. Classic shape, classic feeling. An advanced rubber toy that slides in nicely and fills you up just fine but brings nothing new to the table. An old, reliable standby, the classic plug shape does exactly what you'd expect it to do. And not a whole lot else.

Use

The Classic is well named. Butt plugs have been manufactured on this basic design for years and as we see with this item, it remains a popular style. The long, tapered head allows slow, controlled insertion while the smooth rubber takes lube well and slides in without any discomfort from the texture. Since it is a larger toy, it will give you a stellar full feeling once in place. Deep, full sensations in the anus are a real treat and the Classic will really jerk a knot in your tail.

The base is perfectly standard of this style of plug though the sharp eyed reader will notice that rather than having a circular base the Classic's base is a rounded rectangle. This seemingly minor feature is key to the comfort of this item. The narrow shape lets the base fit snugly between your cheeks rather than being contorted to fit.

Material / Texture

The Triple Ripple is made of Rubber so you are going to have to be a little more thorough when cleaning it. Rubber is a porous material so it is a good idea to use a condom to minimize bacteria transmission, otherwise be sure to clean the toy well with soap or antibacterial wipes. Magnum size fits well over this toy.

Being rubber, the Classic is pretty much going to taste like it. The rubber is fairly soft and heavy which gives you a nice feeling when it is inserted. The smooth texture is a must for such a wide item, any texture at all would likely cause pain. Once you are past the widest section, the plug slides home smoothly and stays there quite firmly allowing you to wear it out if you so desire.

Design / Shape / Size

At 2.5 inches across the widest part, the Classic is certainly not a beginner's toy. It works well as a warm-up to bigger and better things or just as a sensation all on its own. Walking around with the Classic inside you can make your day-to-day work all the more interesting. Since it is a larger item and since it is made of rubber, the Classic is fairly heavy. The weight makes it secure and stable during use but could be annoying if you are traveling.

Performance

The appeal of butt plugs is that stretching feeling you get as your body accommodates the toy up to its widest part, then the sudden rush as you pass that point and the toy slides home inside you and your muscles contract around it. It is quite the sensation and the larger the toy, the more intense the feeling.

Since the Classic is one of the larger plugs on the market, the feeling is fairly intense if you can take it. The smooth rubber is an excellent material for a toy like this and feels great. The plug is a proven design and this one performs just as you would expect. It's nothing earth shattering but as far as plugs go, I would say it's one of the better ones.

Care and Maintenance

Rubber is a pretty simple material to take care of. It resists dirt and lint, it is rugged and durable, and it does not break down easily. Its porous nature is what you really need to watch out for though, make sure you use the Classic with a condom or clean it thoroughly with antibacterial wipes.

Since rubber doesn't attract dust like some materials, it's up to you whether you want to store this toy in an individual ziploc bag. Being fairly large, it may convince you to upgrade to a larger toybox though.

Packaging

The Classic arrives in a pretty minimalist plastic package with a cardboard backing. Once the toy is removed, there's really nothing to do with the package but trash it. It's not suitable for storing the toy due to the open back. Luckily, it's recyclable!

Personal comments

The Classic is a reliable item. It does just what it was made to do and does it well. Even so, I can't help but feel its older design is a bit outdated these days.

It may be simple, it may be an old design, and it may be rubber, but by golly I still find myself coming back to the trusty old Classic Butt Plug Royal. It is a good, solid design and is excellent for warming up during longer sessions where I don't want to use the more unusually shaped plugs or the Triple Ripple plug is not effective enough (the widest point of the Triple Ripple is at the very bottom and does not stretch the upper part of the anal sphincter muscle very well).

The rubber material is not the best but I've never had an issue cleaning it up. I still keep it in a large ziploc bag just in case it has a bad reaction to one of the other toys in my chest. All in all, the Classic is still one of my favorites and I recommend it to any and all advanced users. This old design has been around for so long for good reason.

Great review. It definitely does sound like it's a classic for a reason. Is there much difference in the pliability/squishiness of this and say, Tantus' Ringo? What makes them choose rubber (aside from cost)?

You would find the Tantus Ringo to be noticeably firmer than this plug. While this is one of the denser rubber items I've run into over the years, it still has flex and give that make it a pretty soft toy compared to the silicone plugs. Rubber is cheap to produce and pretty simple to maintain. I think the idea is that most of the rubber toys on the market will be pretty entry level while the more advanced versions will be made of higher quality materials.

Also, can someone actually take a tape measure and confirm the circumfrence? At this size even a quarter inch makes a difference.

      The large plug has changed in the last several months or year. The picture you've linked is the old style. It was significantly larger than the new one, and had a very flimsy base that has been known to fold up and follow the rest of the toy in to your bum.

      As far as I know, you can't find the old one online. Vendor's simply haven't updated the pictures, but it's identical to the white one (which seems to be updated more frequently).

      The current model is somewhere between 2, to 2.25" in diameter. It's no where near 2.5"

      I was an original owner of the larger model, but was never able to accommodate it's entire girth (I swear it was well over 2.5"). I ended up tossing it during a move, without realizing that it's impossible to find anymore. The new version just doesn't live up to the original, but the sturdy base is a welcomed improvement.
