Ryder - Simply the Best
The Ryder represents what may be the perfect plug in my mind. The head is big enough to open me up somewhat while the neck is narrow enough and long enough to allow the Ryder to stay in place well. The base is formed well to sit comfortably between the cheeks. It may not be as big or as curvy as some, but its beauty is in its simplicity.Published: November 20, 2007
Pros:
Great size for an anal beginner; Stays in place well; Base sits comfortably between the cheeks
Cons:
A little boring, perhaps
At first glance, the Ryder appears to be a very standard plug. In my mind, there are three things by which to judge a butt plug. In no particular order, these three things are: the material of the plug, the dimensions of the insertable portion, and the attributes of the base.
First off, we’ll look at materials. As with all Tantus toys, the Ryder is made out of high quality silicone, and all you toy lovers out there know the benefits of silicone by now. The Ryder I received is a very attractive dark purple with a barely perceptible marbling within the silicone. I like this color, because although it is adequately subdued, it still stands out from all my black toys.
Now, if you have read my review of the Severin plug, there are certain attributes of that plug that I enjoy. Although the Ryder doesn’t have the sexy curves of the Severin, the rounded head is very comfortable going in and I found it very easy to insert. Although the 1 inch diameter probably precludes its use for novices, it is enough to satisfy intermediate to expert anal players. The 3 inch insertable length is perfect for a plug since it is enough to allow for a decent size “neck,” while not being too long to cause discomfort during extended wear. I personally found the size to be very satisfying.
Finally, the base of the Ryder is where it really shines. The edges of the base are very rounded and the width of the base is smaller than the Severin. The attributes of the Ryder base make it very comfortable to wear for long periods of time or during different activities. It is also compatible for use with an o-ring harness. I really appreciate the thought that went into the base of the Ryder.
Overall, the Ryder is perfectly normal. It is made from perfect materials, it is perfectly insertable, and it has a perfect base. What it may be missing in terms of bells and whistles that other plugs might have, it more than makes up for in its overall functionality. If you haven’t figured it out by now, I really like the Ryder plug. In fact, I will go so far as to say that the Ryder provides better functionality and comfort than any other plug I have owned. I now have a new favorite plug!

Follow-up commentary
17 months after original review
After getting the Ryder, I almost stopped looking for new butt plugs. I have added a few to the collection since then, but the Ryder still holds its own with any of them. Its still my "go to" plug if I just want to stick something in my ass for a while. It works well for some anal stimulation while we're having sex because it is so easy to get in, and it stays in place well. I realize that I've just been singing the praises of the Ryder this whole time, but it's hard to find fault with something that works so well. If anything ever happened to it, I would definitely be looking for a new Ryder right away.

Can we get more toys in Copper?
-
The Ryder in Copper is so pretty. I'd love to see more toys offered in this colour. :) Is that likely to happen at all? I haven't seen it on any other listing. Is this colour discontinued?

Is this colour discontinued?Yes, it sure has been discontinued. It was weird - Copper was a slow seller, and we got some feedback from retailers that it wasn't at all popular. Then when we discontinued last Spring it got snapped up pretty quickly. I only have closeouts left, but we're hoping that by discontinuing Copper we'll have more time in the production schedule to pursue other colors.

Glow in the dark? That's my favorite color! Maybe something black light reactive?

Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?

Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?

Some, not all silicone lube will 'stick' to silicone material. I have read that some premium silicone lubes will work with some premium silicone materials. You can try some on the base and see, when I last tried it kinda etched the silicone material. (does that make sense) It left a indentation were the lube was.
That's the basics, Some of the other members can give a more technical answer. -
Some silicone lubes will bond to some silicones. This seems to be more of an issue the softer the silicone is, so toys like O2 and VixSkin will be more susceptible (makes sense, as the silicone has fewer crosslinks). Quality lubes seem to have less of a problem also, and it is likely that cheaper silicones might have more of a problem.
I have tested quality silicone lube on several quality silicone toys and did not notice a permanent problem, but (a) the toys developed "hives" that lasted for a few hours (was gone the next day) and (b) it's really hard to clean the silicone lube off of the toys, but it can be done. While this is purely subjective, but it seemed that the silicone lube wasn't as "lubey" on silicone toys. I don't use silicone lube on silicone toys anymore - it's just not worth the trouble.

Is this going to be in stock soon?

If you haven't noticed, I've been going over my wishlist (see the O2 discussion) and I've noticed that this plug that I've wanted forever isn't even in stock. Will it be restocked?
-
That's funny. Two of the toys that I want to purchase are out of stock as well. The Vixen Ryder and Johnny. Then I noticed that several Vixen products are out of stock at the moment. I wonder when all of these toys will be restocked.
