The toy that broke the golden rule of anal play

Tantus makes top quality toys; almost all of our other toys are made by them. The material, texture and shape are all top notch; the base needs to be significantly stronger.
Published: November 13, 2011
Pros:
Soft, squishy texture, pure silicone, good size for advanced beginners or intermediate anal players.
Cons:
Design issues render it unusable for me.

Use

Ryder is a intermediate size butt plug (1.5 inches in diameter) that came highly recommended by several people and almost 50 reviews. I was excited to receive this in the mail, and scheduled some quiet time for us to get acquainted. See below for what happened at our little meeting.

Material / Texture

This toy, like all of Tantus' silicone toys, is top quality smooth silicone. It tends to be a little "squishier" then our other Tantus silicone toys (See the review about using it for a stress ball :-), but that caused no problems with insertion. There are no seams or other issues to deter from the smooth slickness. Being silicone, it is non-porous, and should only be used with non-silicone based lubes. A fair amont of Pjur Aqua made this toy almost hard to hold onto. The toy had no smell after a quick "new toy" wash with warm water and anti-bacterial soap.
    • No odor
    • Not porous at all
    • Smooth

Design / Shape / Size

The bulb is not tapered, like most of the "classical" butt plugs. If you are not used to anal play, you should be a little warmed up with fingers or other toys. Once you are ready, Ryder slides right into place with a satisfying pop.

The base consists of two narrow wings on opposite sides of the plug. They are there to prevent the plug from completely entering your rectum. Most of the other reviews talk of them being very comfortable to wear.

Which brings us to the problem. The BIG problem. The "Broke the golden rule of anal play" problem.

The base folds far too easily to prevent the entire plug from entering your anus. This is not a "hmm, wonder if that could happen", nor even a "Boy, hope that doesn't happen!" statement.

This is a "OMG, what just happened?!" statement.

Laying on my back, not pushing on the toy internally with muscles or externally with anything, it suddenly went "SCHLOOP!" and was completely inside me. Yikes! All sorts of unpleasant thoughts of the ER went through my head. I immediately rolled off the bed into a squatting position. I reached up with a finger and could feel one of the base "tabs" still by the opening. I managed to coax it outside and pull the plug out of me, to my vast relief!

The plug immediately went into the "never to be used again" pile

Now, to be fair, I'm a big guy. 6'4", 230 lbs. I'm not an anal novice, but I'm no size queen either; the largest plug I've ever taken was 2". I know my body openings are correspondingly larger than a 5'2" 95 lb woman. But as flexible as that base is, I'd be concerned about anyone using it for anal play.

Performance

The Ryder does give a nice firm feeling once it's inside. The initial "pop" of entering is very satisfying, and the soft texture of the silicone makes it very comfortable. The base is just too flexible/small for me.
    • Comfortable

Care and Maintenance

As with all quality silicone toys, a wash with soap and water is fine for us married folk. If I was sharing it with multiple people, then I probably boil it or run it through the dishwasher (air dry). We store it in the original clamshell box it came it to keep it from being up against any other toys in the toybox.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Packaging

Tantus toys come in a nice clear plastic box, suspended in a clamshell package in the box. The outside box can be a pain to open sometimes, with 3 plastic tabs on the top of the box that need to be released before you can remove the inner packaging.
    • Not discreet

Personal comments

I wanted to like the Ryder. I really did. The texture and shape were just what I was looking for, and I love my other Tantus toys. But with the base being that floppy, I just can't use it without fearing it's heading for the dark reaches of inner space all on its own.
Follow-up commentary
Yes! It's now the perfect little plug! The base has been redesigned, with a thicker shape that will not flex like the old thin "wings" did. The new base is still comfortable, but now there are no worries of it heading off into uncharted territory on its own. Ryder, you're a winner now!

Hello, everyone, and thanks for the updates. Just wanted to let you know that a close equivilent to the Ryder, the Zing, works great with no fears of it disappearing. You can see my review at Zing. Tantus rocks!

I've slept with this toy in me several times without a "swallow". I'm not sure If I was very lucky or if you were very unlucky, but thanks for the info and the review.

whoa! lol. for a beginner ready about potential new anal sex toys (esp one that is apparently very popular), it's pretty darn disturbing to read that your butt swallowed it up! yikes! think I might pass. for now.

It really is too bad that you didn't like the Ryder. Hopefully, you've found a plug you like better. Thanks for the review!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who was a little concerned about the base, though I did let others talk me out of worrying too much, and based on your experience there was cause for worry. Glad there isn't anymore.

  • Can we get more toys in Copper?
    • The Ryder in Copper is so pretty. I'd love to see more toys offered in this colour. :) Is that likely to happen at all? I haven't seen it on any other listing. Is this colour discontinued?

Yes, it sure has been discontinued. It was weird - Copper was a slow seller, and we got some feedback from retailers that it wasn't at all popular. Then when we discontinued last Spring it got snapped up pretty quickly. I only have closeouts left, but we're hoping that by discontinuing Copper we'll have more time in the production schedule to pursue other colors.
    • Glow in the dark? That's my favorite color! Maybe something black light reactive?

  • Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?
    • Why should you never use silicone on a silicone toy?
    • Some, not all silicone lube will 'stick' to silicone material. I have read that some premium silicone lubes will work with some premium silicone materials. You can try some on the base and see, when I last tried it kinda etched the silicone material. (does that make sense) It left a indentation were the lube was.

That's the basics, Some of the other members can give a more technical answer.
    • Some silicone lubes will bond to some silicones. This seems to be more of an issue the softer the silicone is, so toys like O2 and VixSkin will be more susceptible (makes sense, as the silicone has fewer crosslinks). Quality lubes seem to have less of a problem also, and it is likely that cheaper silicones might have more of a problem.

I have tested quality silicone lube on several quality silicone toys and did not notice a permanent problem, but (a) the toys developed "hives" that lasted for a few hours (was gone the next day) and (b) it's really hard to clean the silicone lube off of the toys, but it can be done. While this is purely subjective, but it seemed that the silicone lube wasn't as "lubey" on silicone toys. I don't use silicone lube on silicone toys anymore - it's just not worth the trouble.

  • Is this going to be in stock soon?
    • If you haven't noticed, I've been going over my wishlist (see the O2 discussion) and I've noticed that this plug that I've wanted forever isn't even in stock. Will it be restocked?
    • That's funny. Two of the toys that I want to purchase are out of stock as well. The Vixen Ryder and Johnny. Then I noticed that several Vixen products are out of stock at the moment. I wonder when all of these toys will be restocked.
