This is SMALL?

While this plug claims to be the "small" variety, I found that to be quite arguable. As an anal-sex beginner, I was a bit intimidated with the size, but through patience, time, and a LOT of lubrication, I was able to accommodate this plug comfortably, and have since added it to my collection of frequently used toys.

Use

Alright, so here's a secret: I have a tight bum. I'm not saying this to try to brag or gloat - quite the opposite, actually. It had actually become somewhat problematic until recently. You see, my husband and I wanted to get into anal sex, but he was big, and I was small..and, well, you know the whole thing about the immovable object and the unstoppable force? Yeah, it was something like that.

After doing a large bit of searching, I decided on this. The head was a bit smaller than my husband is in circumference, and it had a thicker than average shaft once you got past the head, so I figured it would be best for what I wanted, which was to get my anus adjusted a bit more to having something in it, of a decent size, without it causing me excruciating pain.

Success! After over a week of daily attempts and nearly an entire ounce of Pjur, I was finally able to get the spade in place. It wasn't the most comfortable thing I had ever experienced, but it didn't hurt once I got past the "head", either. The base is very wide, and left me without worry that it would somehow manage to get lost, which was my fear with a few other products that I had tried in the past. I purchased the amber wave with the hopes that it would work to get my husband in there, but the lack of flare and slender shaft were unable to do what the spade managed to do fairly easily.

I found that the base was a double-edged sword -- it was way too thick to get sucked in or lost, but it was also too thick to wear for long-term, unlike some other plugs that are designed for long-term wear. While I found the size to be frightening in terms of a "small" plug, and wouldn't recommend it to beginners, I'm sure that a plug of this size and shape would feel wonderful for those with a more moderate experience with anal.

Because this is made out of tempered glass it's very safe in terms of insertion, and it also has that wonderful ability to get past any obstacles, such as a frightened anus, as long as you work with it slowly and with a lot of lube. Glass has very little drag, so for me, I found this to be more comfortable than the silicone toys that I already owned.

Material / Texture

Sexy spades is made out of high quality tempered glass, and is very, very smooth. There is absolutely no texture to this baby at all other than the very faint ripple on the underside of the base, where the glass was (I assume) poured. Even though it looks like there would be some textures because of the ripples in color, there aren't any at all.

Because it is made out of glass, it's completely hypoallergenic, phthalate free, and can be used in conjunction with any lube of your choice.
    • No odor
    • Not porous at all

Design / Shape / Size

Standing at just over 3 1/4th inches, with 2 3/4th inches of insertable length, the spade has a circumference of 4 3/4 inches. The diameter of the head is 1 1/2 inches, with the neck being 7/8th of an inch. That doesn't seem like much, but for being "small", it is. The shaft of the spade is nearly exactly the same circumference of the neck of a 20oz bottle of soda, with the "head" portion being almost twice that.

Thankfully, the designers of this toy realized that something like this is going to need more than just a bit of a curve for insertion, and the head comes to a nice taper at the end allowing for slow, steady insertion into the anus.

While it was a little intimidating to me in size, what it has in intimidation it doubles in beauty. Dark blue swirls with a golden amber to form swirls around the entire head of this toy, fading at the very top into a puff of light blue before it's gone. The shaft and base are transparent, but if you look at it from the base first, it's a morass of blues.

In short, this is beautiful.

Performance

For me, this toy was great. It allowed my husband and I to experience anal sex fairly comfortably together, without the use of (dangerous) numbing agents or other devices that can prove unsafe.

I enjoyed that it had a thicker-than-usual shaft, instead of being large and bulbous, and then disappearing into something so thin you can't really tell there's anything in there after insertion. Because of the thickness of the base, I was able to lay on my back with it inserted and have sex, without worrying that it would somehow get lodged inside while thrusting during sex. It was also flat enough that it wasn't terribly uncomfortable while on my back or side. However, because the base is circular in shape, I couldn't stand with it in without wanting to hunch over awkwardly, so use outside of the bedroom was not an option for us.

Being realistic about it, it's a butt plug. It's not meant to do much of anything else other than go in your rear, so it's not got a whole huge variety of functions. The design nullifies it for vaginal use. It's not exactly discrete, so you aren't going to want to leave it on your desk pretending it's a paper-weight, unless glass plugs are your bag when it comes to art. It is, however, very travel friendly, since it's so small.

Care and Maintenance

Being glass, you can use absolutely any type of lubrication you want (although for obvious purposes, I wouldn't suggest using oil based, if it's also going to be inserted anally), and aren't required to use lubes -designed- for anal sex, since it already has so much natural glide to it. Because this is made out of food-grade material, it's easy to clean - soap and water, a water/bleach solution, antibacterial soap, toy cleaner, boiling, etc all can be used.

With glass, however, comes the need to keep this in a bit more of a secure place - you don't want it rolling around in your drawers banging against the rest of your toys, or you may end up with a crack or chip, and you certainly wouldn't want -that- to happen. Sadly, this doesn't come with a storage container, but I found that keeping it inside a sock works pretty well.

Packaging

This came in a plastic container, with a plastic tray nestled inside. Inside of the tray sat the spade. There were no directions or anything with it, though I'm sure it's fairly self-explanatory what you're going to do with it, and how (anal plug, hello?). If giving this as a gift, I would suggest wrapping it and/or putting it in a box of its own, as the packaging is very obvious about what is inside, even if it isn't raunchy or tacky in appearance. Because the packaging is made of plastic, long-term storage is likely not going to happen, and I just threw the whole thing away once I opened it.

Personal comments

As I already said, without a substantial amount of lubrication this toy would not have budged. Because it starts with a smaller circumference and then works up very quickly to a larger one, I found that the first few times, I literally didn't get anywhere. I was able to get the first half of the plug inserted into my anus, and then I had to stop. I'd remove it, add more lube, and then try again. For two or three evenings straight, this is all I did. I'd get to the point that it would be too uncomfortable, and I'd stop. The next night it would get easier, so on and so forth. Eventually, I grit my teeth, gave it a solid shove, and then it went in. After leaving it in for 30 minutes or so, I'd slowly remove it. Removal also took a bit of time, and a lot of relaxation, but with time that also got easier.

I found that when used in tandem with a g-spot toy, I could REALLY feel this plug (a few of the thrusts actually being somewhat uncomfortable). It also is a nice addition to my collection, and is now the only plug that I will use rectally while having sex, because it's got enough of a heft to the shaft that I can still feel it, while not being so intrusive in length that it causes pain when my husband thrusts.

Follow-up commentary
Oh, sexy spades, how I love you. While you do bring me discomfort when I haven't used you for awhile, I always find myself coming back for you when it's time to warm up for anal sex. I don't think anyone else could quite do it like you do, so I'll tolerate your occasional pain because you make it so worth all the eventual pleasure!

Your review was amazing. I just got this toy as a gift and I tried using it recently...let's just say FAIL. It definitely is much larger than I thought and I am going to take your advice and use lots of lube and take it slow. Thank you for your detailed review!

Very informative review though as a newbie to anal play and after first using the meteorite I found this an easy slide in. I have the medium sized one and am looking forward to using it since this one kept slipping out.

Great review! I'm new here and new to anal plugs, I know this may be the silliest question ... But if you put too much lube are there chances it will just slip entirely In and be stuck? I have the smallest bum ever lol, and you're right it is a lot bigger than I thought... Glad I came across your review before I got it, yikes

I thought this was a bit too big at first as well, but when I bought a small one it didn't stay in place as well during vaginal intercourse. Definitely worth sticking through the adjustment phase!
