An alternative for fans of vegan BDSM gear
The vegan collar by Aslan Leather isn't my favorite collar. I frequently pick my more narrow leather collar. I'd really like to enjoy this more since it's vegan and Aslan makes it. There's a lifetime guarantee on all of their products. Ultimately, it's too wide for me, the O-ring is much bigger than I'd like, it needed surgery to be the right size for my average sized neck, and when I put it on it doesn't feel like "my" collar.Published: June 10, 2010
Pros:
Great leatherette material stands the test of time, useful in BDSM play.
Cons:
Too wide for my taste, wasn't adjustable without some minor surgery,

Use
The Vegan Collar by Aslan Leather is both fashionable and useful. In general it's marketed for those who travel in BDSM circles, but could easily be seen as an accessory worn to a nightclub. There are no beginners when it comes to collars. It's mostly about comfort, fit, use, and preference.

I found the Vegan Collar to have some positives and some detractors. I really like the material, which I believe to be leatherette. It has staying power that leather doesn't have. Leatherette feels butter soft to the touch and is imperceptible as far as differentiating between it and leather. The smell is mild as well.
The Vegan Collar felt too wide for my taste. I have another collar that feels more comfortable around my neck and that one is a bit less than an inch. The Vegan Collar is an inch and a half and it makes quite a difference. It feels much more "present" on my neck, rather than a piece of jewelry that you'd maybe forget was there after a while. You don't forget the Vegan Collar is on.
The other issue I had with the Vegan Collar is the length and adjustability. My other collar can be adjusted to a point where there is one notch tighter that my neck is too large for, as well as several notches that my neck is too small for. The Vegan Collar's tightest notch is close to being tight enough for me, but not quite. It felt uncomfortable to have it not quite tight enough. I also was less than pleased that when I put the collar on, there was an excess part of the collar, after buckling it, that showed when I looked in the mirror.
To solve this I did a bit of surgery, though it doesn't look sharp as it did when I got it home. I created another notch in the back so I could tighten it for my specific neck. The excess part of the collar that was unsightly, I just cut off. It was easy enough to cut it in a perfect line and then bevel the edges for a more polished look. The hole I made for the buckle to go through looks rather unsightly when I look closely at it, but isn't glaringly obvious if you don't know where to look for the "surgical scar". It does do the job.
I dislike the size of the metal ring that hangs from the collar in the front center. It's simply too big for my taste. I'd prefer it be smaller. The thickness seems about right though.
What I love about it is how it feels as well as durability. It's butter soft and holds up exceedingly well. Leather, over time, can get worn out and looks less beautiful, some say. Leatherette will look exactly as it does today, years from now. Leatherette is basically vinyl or a form of it.
The one disadvantage I know of with this material is that it isn't porous and so it doesn't allow air to pass through it, thus sweat can accumulate.

Performance
The vegan collar by Aslan Leather is not my favorite collar. I had been very much looking forward to its arrival since I have two other Aslan Leather products and I really like their line. However, the size of the collar (too wide for me) and the fact that it wasn't adjustable to my neck right out of the box was disappointing.
I planned to wear it to a fetish party along with a PVC corset and skirt. At the last minute I chose to wear my other collar, a thinner one that felt much more comfortable and looked better overall.
The vegan collar isn't just an accessory. It can be used as an attachment point in bondage, though never without a good sense of how to do it without ending with a trip to the hospital. I won't go into how you could use this in BDSM play but I'll say that it's a sturdy collar with a strong O-ring at the front of the neck. Lots of possibilities come to mind.

Care and Maintenance
From reading a little more about caring for leatherette I know people have recommended not using vinyl cleaner. There's no need to condition it with leather products as it doesn't absorb in the manner that leather does. Soap and water are perfectly acceptable. Some people have suggested citrus-based products but I think it's a matter of personal preference.
Packaging
This collar came in a black unmarked box. The collar was in a plastic sealed bag inside. One could wrap the box easily if it's intended to be a gift. There were instructions included for care of the collar but they're directions for how to care for leather. This is unnecessary and a waste of money since it is non-leather material, likely leatherette. It won't absorb in the fashion that leather does.

Great review! We also covered this collar and found we liked it more, but to each their own..... But as we're not vegans we also prefer real leather!
Great review!
Great Review!
I just ordered my very own! Great review!
Thanks for reviewing
Thank you so much for this! I'm pretty tiny so size is important to me.
great review
great review
Thank you for the great review. I like the feel and smell of real leather, but it's good to have that option for those that are vegan. Great idea.
Great info on the ring being kind of large, thanks for the detailed review.
I worry that none of these would stand up to my play.
I think this harness is pretty sturdy. I'm not sure what type of play used be doing that would cause it to not withstand it.
Thanks for the review! Very helpful.
Great review with all needed information. Thanks.
