Black rose forbidden flower mouth bit - mouth gag discontinued by Doc Johnson - review by Breas

My partner and I had decided to purchase the Black Rose Forbidden Flower Mouth bit for a couple reasons. Firstly, we had never tried any sort of gag before. The non-intimidating appearance of this mouth bit combined with the low price had peaked our interest. We planned on using the mouth bit during play as a way to surrender our speech. During BDSM play, the submissive surrenders things like hand movement with wrist cuffs, sight with blindfolds, etc. We thought we would give the speech surrendering a try.

I was looking online to find out a bit more about the mouth bit usage and had read that the mouth bit is a commonly used item for pony play. My partner and I don’t practice pony play but I thought it would be good to note for those of you who may be interested in that.



The Black Rose Forbidden Flower Mouth Bit by Doc Johnson arrived in an attractive, rectangular, cardboard package. The front of the box has a photo of a model wearing the gag, and states the product name. The back of the packaging gives a brief description of the product, states a few product features, and the company website. The box would be fine to store the mouth bit in when it’s not being used though it’s a bit large. I play on using the box for storage because I find the packaging attractive. You can recycle the packaging if you choose not to use it.

Inside of the cardboard packaging, the mouth bit is wrapped around a thin piece and cardboard and surrounded by plastic. Doc Johnson’s website lists the material as “a silky fabric, a leather-like material, and the bit is ABS (plastic)”.

The purple sash that wraps around the head is the silky fabric. I’m not sure if it’s actual silk because the website doesn’t say this. I can say though that it’s very soft, smooth, and silk-like. The leather-like material is what makes up the 2 rose buds that sit on each side of the mouth bit.

Length of ties (from rose bud accent to end of sash): 23 ¾ inches each
Width of sash: 2 1/8 inches

There is no stretch to the sashes but they are lengthy enough to accommodate a wide variety of sizes of heads. I was actually able to tie the sashes behind by head comfortably and then bring the ends of the sashes forward to tie at the centre of my eyes. This worked fairly well at acting as a blind fold.

The sashes are a double layer of material and are not sheer. The ends of each sash are angled. The sashes are a gorgeous purple colour (my favourite colour). The faux leather roses are black in colour and are approximately 6 ½ inches away from each other. The plastic mouth bit is a black tube. W

ith the bit being only 5 1/8 inches in length, the bit can be moved slightly to the left or right between the roses. The plastic tube that acts as a mouth bit cannot be removed fully from the sashes since the roses are large and are sewn directly onto the sash.



There is a slight curve to the bit, leaving the ends of the bit sitting against your cheeks if you have the curve facing outward. I don’t find this uncomfortable at all. Actually, I find this more comfortable the having the curved part sitting inside of your mouth. The bit is a flexible plastic so it can be bitten into without hurting your teeth.

There were no teeth marks left in the bit when we were done using this but I wasn’t biting extremely hard. While the bit does not completely silence the noise by the wearer, it does make it a lot more complicated to get your words out. When I tried saying certain things while wearing the gag, my partner wasn’t really able to understand what I was saying. Your words and sounds do come out muffled.

To clean the plastic bit, you could wipe it with soap and water. You could sterilize the plastic by wiping it down with a bleach/water solution or rubbing alcohol but you’d want to make sure you scrub it well afterwards because you don’t want the taste of bleach or rubbing alcohol in your mouth. As for the sashes, I’m unsure of the exact material it is since it’s listed as a “silk-like material”. I’d suggest just delicately hand washing it and letting it hang to dry.

Overall, I think it’s a great gag, especially for beginners. It’s comfortable to wear, non-intimidating in appearance, and an excellent price. I’ve deducted one star because there is no care instructions included and with the roses being non-detachable, it makes it a bit difficult to clean. It would have been nice if the roses were attached to the sashes with broach style pins or a similar item.
