Mr. Wartenberg's Kinky Secret

This device provides moderate excitement to those who seek pleasure through pain. I do not recommend it to users who are new to BDSM. Sensations range depending on the user. This toy can be used lightly and provide almost a ticklish-effect or can break skin if used with enough force. Be sure to check with partner(s) about what they allow, as this has potential to cause unwanted harm if used incorrectly.

Use

If you're just starting off in BDSM and haven't tried much, I would not recommend this toy. It is, in short, a device for people experienced with pain and pleasure. This metal wheel has small needle-like spikes attached that can be used to roll across the skin of a submissive partner. The needles stimulate pain-like responses and release chemicals such as adrenaline, which can have a very pleasurable effect. However, if you are inexperienced with using pain for pleasure, this may just feel awkward and annoying.

Design / Craftsmanship / Material / Size / Fit

I'd say this toy is about six inches in length, but really doesn't take up much space at all. It is made of metal, does not bend, and appears quite durable. The handle is easy to grip and the needle-points are sharp. The wheel is well-made and glides over skin. I have not experienced it getting stuck as of this time, which has made me pretty happy as a result.

Performance

This product met my expectations, and I was excited to use it. I have never owned such a device, but I liked the effects it had on me. This is not something I would have thought to buy for myself, but I'm glad I did!

I have read that this product can also be used for people who suffer from self-injury. I can agree that this has potential to be used as a therapeutic device, as it can provide a pain-response without breaking the skin. However, heavy use of this product can break skin and cause bleeding, so use with caution. Keep in mind, I am not a medical or psychological professional and this product is not intended to be used as therapy for self-injury, it is merely a thought for other uses.
    • Easy to put on / use

Care and Maintenance

I don't think this requires much maintenance at all. Only thing I would say is be sure to sanitize it if you break skin to make sure there is no blood on the needle-spikes. Other than that, a wet paper towel should keep it clean in between uses.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store
Follow-up commentary
I still like this toy a lot. My only comment that I want to make thus far is that I really haven't gotten much broken skin from this. We do use a lot of pressure sometimes, but it is often difficult to break skin. This has been better used as a light sensation/tickling toy. So, don't be afraid if you think I made it sound like an awful torture device!

thanks for the great review. I like you am not sure about the theropudic aspects of this toy. My daughter was once a self harmer and we had to remove sevreal items from the home that brought her thoughts of self harm. With a few years of intensive treatment she was cured!

I would be very surprised if someone new to BDSM could actually cause harm to themselves or their partner using this particular Wartenburg Wheel. It is sharp but only a person who really shouldn't be experimenting with S/M would use enough force to cause real harm.
The needles aren't quite sharp enough to really puncture the skin deeply and the use of this device as a theraputic aolternative for 'cutters' is controversial at best...some think it worked, some patients saw no benefit. Still I say if it can help someone deal with the intense emotional issues then Huzzah!
I do like that you warn potential users that if they don't really know their bodies or derive pleasure from painful stimulus then it's not going to do much but cause annoyance. This is spot on! One of my guys is a sensualist and loves the wheel and the other positively hates it!
Thanks for the well thought out and informative review!

You're welcome! You know, I'm thinking of doing a follow-up after a bit more use with this toy. I get what you're saying, about new users not being able to cause harm with this, and I do agree. I will consider changing the title.

I have broken skin with this toy, but rarely. The only time skin is broken is when that is the intent and it takes some amount of force to do so. Thank you very much for your input, I will take your comment into consideration when posting a follow-up! =]
