Ring Around the Rosie

The Red Rose Buds Crop is one of the few crops that includes two different sensations right in the tip, but it does require an advanced user to really harness the two different sensations. Because of the multiple layers of leather around the tip, this uniquely-designed crop also can come across as much more thuddy than stingy with accurate use.

extremely useful review
The Red Rose Buds Crop is a long, leather crop made by Ruff Doggie Styles. It has the quality of their other crops, and it is slightly flexible without being too flexible or rigid. The crop includes leather roses along the shaft and at the tip. There are three rose buds along the shaft with a larger rose at the tip. This crop is pretty long at about two feet long, and the pictures on EF accurately portray it.

How does this crop function? It actually works really well in terms of sensation. There are two different, big sensations that you can give out with this one. This is actually one of the few crops that I know of that requires some actual skill for regular use. Why? Because the shaft of the crop actually ends mid-way through the rose bud at the top of the shaft. This means you need to use precise aiming in order to avoid harming your partner. Why? Because there are two different sensations with this crop.

If you hit your partner purely with the rose's tip, this crop does not cause pain. You can definitely feel the crop hitting your skin, but it doesn't cause pain or stinginess at all. Instead, it actually feels slightly thuddy, and it feels more like being tapped by something than being involved in something painful. This makes it a great sensation for newer people to crops because crops can definitely be stingy and painful most of the time.

However, if you hit your partner towards the middle of the rose, the crop is much, much more painful. This is where the shaft of the crop ends, and it definitely feels like it during use. It's very stingy, and it can be very painful. This end could definitely cause bruising if used repeatedly, and it does cause a sharp pain when hit on the surface of the skin. It's a very fine line between using the middle and the tip of the rose's tip, and it can make a big difference between pleasure and pain.

That's exactly why I think this crop should only be used by advanced users or at least people who have had some experience with crops in the past. It takes some precise aiming to avoid using the painful portion of the crop (of course, I'm assuming you're looking to avoid using the painful portion - if that's what you want to use, go for it!) It can be done with a bit of practice on the part of a beginner, but it does require a bit of learning and handling. The crop itself has a hanging strap that can double as a wrist-strap if need be, and it's easy to grasp for use. The crop is flexible without being unwieldy, and it's pretty easy to aim - especially compared to some of the other crops out there.

With most crops, the crop can also be used as a cane. Instead of just hitting with the tip, you can hit with the actual length of the shaft in order to multi-task the use of the crop as a cane. However, with this crop, you can not. This is because of the rose buds all over the shaft. They make it very uncomfortable to use the crop like this, and in fact, the rose buds on the shaft weren't meant for that kind of abuse, and they will come off really quickly if you do that.

That's another thing about this crop. The main rose bud on the tip of the crop is holding on fine, but the three rose buds along the shaft are not holding on as well. Two of them are doing just fine, but the rose bud closest to the top is actually falling off. It has become unglued from the shaft and is hanging loose. It was loose when we received it, so I think it was probably more of a glue-issue than a use-issue, but it's worth mentioning. Using more superglue, we had no issue reattaching it to the shaft, and it hasn't caused any problems for us since then. If you have some super glue lying around, you can reattach the rose buds, and since the rose buds on the shaft don't effect the use, it won't be a huge problem if they fall off for us. It's worth stating that the main rose bud on the tip holds on fine, and we've had absolutely no problems with it.
Experience
This Red Rose Buds Crop is made completely from leather. This does require some special cleaning concerns. For example, I would recommend keeping this away from bodily fluids as leather is pretty hard to sterilize. If you get near bodily fluids, I'd consider it fluid-bonded for at least six months past the last date that it touched bodily-fluids. Keep it away from lubricants as well as leather doesn't enjoy being near them. For storage, the best way to store this is by the hanging strap around the handle.

I like the Red Rose Buds Crop, and it's one of the few crops we have that can be completely painless during use. Many crops, even with wider tips, still only have one layer of material, so they can be painful. This Red Rose Buds Crop, though, has multiple layers of leather around the rose, so it can easily be painless as long as the Top can aim the crop accurately to avoid hitting with the stem. It does have a few quality issues, but it's nothing a bit of superglue can't fix as well.
Follow-up commentary
This is still an adorable crop that we enjoy. One of the little roses leather glue has started to unravel a little bit, but aside from that, the crop looks just as good as it did when we first bought it! It does have a bit more heft than some of our other riding crops because of all of the extra rose buds on it, but it works pretty well, and I am rarely disappointed in the sensation it provides. Plus, friends are always pointing it out when they look at our toy collection - it's definitely a unique piece!
