Sweet Sting for Starters
This is a great toy for those just starting out with light fetish play or those who have experimented and prefer very low pain levels. It is a very cute design and if used just right will leave a little heart (about 1 1/2" x 1 1/2") heart imprint on skin. For the price, it is a great place to start or just something to keep around for occasional light play.Published: June 25, 2010
Pros:
Very cute design, great for beginners and light play
Cons:
Not for the experienced, a little flimsy, doesn't always leave heart mark
Think you and your partner may want to try some light kinky play but not sure your comfort level with pain, or how comfortable you are inflicting it? This crop is a good and affordable place to start.
The whole piece is just under 2 feet long. It has a long shaft with a slightly thicker handle with a hanger strap, and a 2" wide folded over black fake leather square at the end. What makes this toy super cute is the heart cut into the black material at the end, exposing the red fabric strip inside. This heart is meant to leave a heart shaped impression on whomever is on the receiving end. In my experience, it will leave a heart, but only if used on just the right angle with the right amount of pressure.
Because it is on the inexpensive side, this crop is a little flimsy for the experienced. I've never gotten any real level of pain from it - although everyone's pain levels are different. The long thin rod is a little flimsier than some and will bend a bit further than desired to inflict any real discomfort. However, with that in mind, it has not lost its shape or the strength that it does have over the time I've owned and used it. The faux-leather top is also less impressive in the pain department because it's a loop, not a solid double thick piece like ones made for more serious uses and is a fairly thin synthetic material. There are far better, sturdier pieces of bondage/fetish gear out there but this is not a bad purchase at all for the under $11- just don't expect more than what you're paying for.
What it does do is provide a bit of a sting instead - which is great for those just starting out and not comfortable possibly causing their partner pain or for those who just prefer some light play of this sort. However, the sting it provides has been plenty for me in some circumstances when I'm interested in more of a tease than a more involved session.
Since it is just about 2 feet long, this toy cannot be kept in most toy boxes and will have to be hidden somewhere with enough space for those with privacy concerns. Although I have no issues with having to keep hidden in my home - I live alone - I have ever chosen to keep toys like this hanging on their strap on a hanger in my closet to prevent them from getting unnecessarily dirty or possibly bent, broken, etc. Although in my case, I have never had this toy touch any genital regions, I still choose to clean it. I use an antibacterial wipe (Clorox is my preference) just to be super safe, and have had no ill effects to the toy from it. I have never brought this toy into a water situation, and do not recommend it, just in case someone was to get super curious. In addition to it possibly damaging the toy, I doubt it would have the desired effect at all once wet.

Experience
I have had this toy used on me, and have used it on others. I think it provides a great little sting to either start off a session that gets more involved, or when I'm not in the mood for real pain. I've used it on people that weren't as involved in this type of play as I am and have had generally good results all around. Just be advised that if you are looking for a serious piece of equipment to inflict pain very precisely, you may want to go for something more high-end.
Follow-up commentary

We don't use this often, but when we do want something lighter, it's enjoyable. It's also consistently held up well over time, despite it being stored in a way that kind of folded the tip - it took a little playing with but flattened back out nicely and works just as well now as Day one!

what is better for just starting out, and not very painful to play with?

Quote: what is better for just starting out, and not very painful to play with?In my and my partners expirience it is better to start our with a crop. They are easier to control the amount of pain and area it is meant for. We actually started with the Impressions crop, and are thinking about moving up to a tickler/ flogger combo, to get more of the feel for how your body reacts to being smacked. Also maybe try other things like ticklers, they can be used with te impressions crop to lightly pass over where you were hit to add new sensations. ;)
I hope this helped, and if you need anything let me know and I will do my best to help you. -
Quote: what is better for just starting out, and not very painful to play with?Depends on what you are going for. Floggers tend to be more thuddy depending on several factors like cut, width, material, etc, and crops more stingy. They are very different sensations and I would say a better comparison would be Crops vs Canes, in which Crops would be less evil but still pack a punch. Floggers are generally a bit more work to get down right but its really hard to mess up a Crop, just make sure you hit the meaty parts of their butt and thighs.
Personally for me, I started with floggers because I didn't feel like inflicting a lot of pain, but I feel that both are useful toys in my bag.

We've been toying with it. I think with the right one I'd definitely be a fan.

Nice review!
Thanks, it was an interesting review. I guess the heart is more about decorating the crop than really leaving a mark. If it was made of leather, it might...
