Tantric satin ties ankle cuffs by Cal Exotics - review by VelvetBound

I’m not one who avidly participates in bondage by any means, but I am one who likes to throw in some rough play every now and then; something to disrupt our daily routine. Apart from a few pairs of cheap handcuffs we’ve owned in the past, we were pretty lacking when it comes to toys of the trade. I decided that it was time for something new, and a pair of ankle restraints sounded pretty exciting.

The Tantric Satin Ties ankle cuffs from California Exotics really stood out to me. They weren’t plastic, furry, or cheesy nor did they appear too advanced or intimidating. They were perfectly in-between.

When the cuffs arrived, I immediately pulled them from the package. The thick layer of red satin was extremely soft and squishy; very pillow-like. I assume that it must be filled with some sort of light padding. It was also unusually lightweight. I still cannot get over how feathery the material feels (without the weight of the metal of course). These cuffs couldn’t be gentler. The metal ‘D’ shaped rings that attach to the cuffs are sewn in by the woven Velcro straps that are used to adjust them. And believe me, there is more than enough room for adjustment! There is also what I would describe as a ‘P’ shaped latch (perhaps better known as a lobster clasp) on one of the cuffs, which is used to fasten the two together. Simply push down on the latch to open, insert the ‘D’ ring, and release the latch to secure. I’ve seen this sort of fastener used for key chains and jewelry, but this one is probably more industrial and durable.

Once I was ready for a little submission, I had my fiancé strap em’ on me. I couldn’t help but feel completely comfortable with these cuffs. My ankles felt as if they had been wrapped in pillows! I also couldn’t help but notice how long the excess straps were. The cuffs fit, but just barely, and I was left with about 5 in. of Velcro strap just hanging! The pictures definitely don’t show that part. If you have petite ankles, then these may not work at all for you. The only upside of this was that my fiancé could actually wear these if he wanted (though I don’t think he’s going to feel too confident in red and lace)! I am currently considering just cutting these down, to eliminate the excess straps.

We tried several positions with the cuffs, but doggy and missionary seemed to be most comfortable. I was, however, hoping that my legs would reach around the back of my fiancé’s neck, but this just wasn’t working for us at all. In fact, as my ankles pulled against the cuffs so he could slip his head through, I could hear the Velcro starting to tear. I didn’t want to weaken the seams of the straps, so we immediately backed down. I settled for him just simply holding my ankles towards my head instead. These cuffs are comfortable, sure, but I just prefer real restraint to comfort.

If you’re going to be physically restrained it is also important to play safe, and with these cuffs you can be at ease. The clasp is non-locking, making it easy to simply reach down and un-latch at any time. This may or may not be a good thing, depending on your experience or what you prefer. I would have preferred a little more difficulty myself! Either way it is good idea to incorporate a safe word, or gesture just in case.

To get down to it, I just don’t think these cuffs really cut it. I would probably use these more for show; perhaps as a way to hint my need for a little punishment. I would also consider including these into some erotic photography. They do make a lovely, tasteful accessory. They would look even better with the matching handcuffs (which I do believe should be included as a set rather than sold separately)!

These cuffs really are pretty, but I can't help but feel they are still sort of cheap. Nothing has really ripped or torn beyond repair yet, but I can see it coming. These cuffs have honestly had it easy so far, and even with just a little pulling I have noticed the seams of the Velcro straps coming lose. They most definitely would not hold up to rough and forceful play. I just don't see these cuffs having a long life.

The description reads that the cuffs are also made from polyester. I have not had to clean mine yet, but I did wipe them with a damp cloth. If you must wash them, I recommend hand washing with a mild detergent. Don’t worry about getting the metal a little wet, it is suppose to be non-tarnishing, which is a major plus!

Additionally, I included that the noise level is around three bees because as you probably know, Velcro is NOT a silent material when being pulled apart! Fortunately, there are many innocent uses for Velcro in case you are ever questioned.
