Ella; Sometimes she's a pain, sometimes she's a pleasure

My initial thought was 'oh no!' but now that I've figured out how it fits with my body, it's a mediocre 'oh ... okay.' This gets only 3 out of 5 stars due to the fact that it can hurt, and trying to position it right can seriously detract from the pleasure of it all. If you do get it right, however, it does feel good - but not in an explosively amazing way.

Pros:
g-spot stimulation, silicone, lightweight, double ended, body-safe
Cons:
curve is harsh, points on both ends could be less, triangle head hurts sometimes

extremely useful review

Use

Ella is a dual-use dildo; you can use it both for g-spot stimulation as well as regular thrusting. The normal side has a gentle taper with a semi-pointed tip, whereas the side for g-spot stimulation is curved with a flat, triangular head to press where you need it to. You'll want to be careful in either case, because if your vaginal canal is naturally short, you might run the risk of bruising or poking at it with either side if you aren't careful. You'll also want to be careful with the curved side; if you use it too close to the entrance of your vagina, the rubbing movements can irritate the urethra which could lead to things like bruising, or UTI's. It can also catch on your pubic bone if you aren't careful, which is unpleasant.

There's no flared base, which means it can get lost in you - so you shouldn't use it anally. It can be used for temperature play (silicone can be frozen or boiled without breaking), but you'll want to be careful to not to use it while it's too hot. It holds both heat and cold very well, and heated or chilled can maintain the temperature for about an hour if you're lucky.

This is NOT A VIBRATOR! I've noticed people giving it ratings with vrooms and bees, and that's extremely irrelevant. It's a plain g-spot dildo without any vibes attached, so you'll want to be aware of that if you're looking at it and hoping that it vibrates.

It's easily used as a partner-play device; it's by no means a solo only toy. Your partner can easily take hold of it and use it on you just as well as you can, and vice-versa.

Material / Texture

This is made out of 100% platinum-grade silicone, which is hypoallergenic, body-safe and used in hospital-grade materials. It's about a 50 to 55 shore hardness, which is fairly firm and has relatively little give, or plush. The toy is almost perfectly smooth, except for the seam (which is hardly noticeable at ALL) down the length of the toy, and the LELO name stamped onto the side of the toy. If you're looking for something with texture, this won't do it for you.

It feels very velvety to the touch, and you can easily run your hands over it. Lube will have the tendency to 'pool' on it, so spreading it around can be something of a hassle, but it doesn't absorb fluids due to the material it's made out of.

There's no smell that I noticed, and no taste.

Design / Shape / Size

I like the design. It's a good, sleek dildo that does what it's supposed to - however, there are some hangups in my opinion. It could be longer; At seven inches, with about four and a half usable if you still want to hang on, the length and lack of handle makes it hard to grip onto if you're using it for the intended g-spot stimulation. If your g-spot is further back, it could make it hard to use without losing your hold on it. The curve of the 'head' - which is 1.5 inches long and 1 inch wide - could also be less severe in the curved area. I've run into problems with it hooking onto my pelvic bone, as well as actually hurting if I don't angle it right. The girth is also a bit small for me, from 0.5 inches at the slimmest, to 1.2 inches at the fattest, but that's a personal thing. For everyone else, this seems like it would be both a great introductory toy into g-spot play, as well as regular dildos; the tapered shape of the non-curved end makes it a great practice toy for people just beginning to venture into penetration play.

The weight, however, is perfectly fine; it's light enough for extended use and it won't fatigue your muscles.

It's small enough to travel with, and the shape doesn't immediately give it away as a dildo. It's not realistic, which is nice if you want to leave it out, but people who are knowledgeable about sex toys will notice it for what it is.

Performance

I find that there are a number of things I both like and dislike about this toy. I really enjoy the material because I'm overly sensitive to things and it's made out of hospital-grade materials. I also found that, when I can get it to work for me, the curved head works just as it was intended and rubs right up against my g-spot just as long as I angle it right. The 'head' of it also doubles as a handle for regular thrusting, which is nice.

What I don't like about it unfortunately outweighs the pros. The curve is too sharp and sudden; it would have been better were it gradual and less angled over-all, and the material could perhaps have been less hard, though that's personal preference. The length is also something that I wasn't happy with; it made it hard to grip onto and hard to get it deep enough for either of it's uses, as a g-spot toy or a regular penetration toy. It was also too smooth, to me; it was hard to grip onto any part of it when lubrication was involved, which meant I was constantly having to adjust how I was holding it and using it - which in turn made it harder to angle correctly.

Care and Maintenance

Since this is pure silicone, you can clean it in a number of ways: You can use toy wipes, you can boil it for 3 minutes, you submerge it in a 10% bleach solution for 15 minutes, you can toss it in the dishwasher on the top rack without soap for a cycle, or you can wash it off with soap and water.

You should NOT use silicone or oil-based lubes with this, since they can eat away at your toy - which means only water-based lubes with her. When storing her, it's okay to put her with other toys just as long as they're also 100% platinum silicone as well; if you mix toy materials, it can also degrade, so put her in the box or bag she comes with if you want to put her with other materials. It comes with a silky storage bag, and the box is discreet and classy looking and can be used as an extra method of storage if you don't want to use the bag.

It's body safe due to being 100% silicone, and if you share it with a partner you can use it without a condom just as long as you fully sterilize it first. If not, condom use would be recommended, because if you don't clean it properly fluids can be transferred from one user to another.

Packaging

I received this as a gift in the box only, so I'm not sure if it comes with any other packaging. However, the box is a matte black with the word 'LELO' on the lid. When you open it, the Ella is sitting inside under a clear plastic piece that fits with the opaque, black bottom insert. They both conform to the toy, which is great for storage. Under both halves of the packaging is the toy bag it comes with.

You could very easily use this as a gift box if you wanted to, and it would probably go under the radar unless someone's familiar with the brand names of sex toys.

It also comes with an instruction manual in multiple languages and an explanation of the warranty.
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Good for storage

Personal comments

I like her, but she won't be one of my favorite toys any time soon. She is, unfortunately, not terribly compatible with my body and I don't think I'll warm up to her given time. I'll keep using her, though, and if I find out differently then I'll tell you all the secrets to it.

I do think this would be great for someone whose body isn't as sensitive to things rubbing the upper wall, however, so if you know that you wouldn't mind that, I'd suggest going for it.

Experience

As I stated before, this does have some issues with it. While I absolutely love the material, the hardness and the angles of this toy made it hard for me to use comfortably; if I wasn't careful I could poke my insides with the pointier end, or I could bruise my urethra with the curved head of it.

The issues aside, once you have it in the right position, it works perfectly. The 'head' of it gives enough stimulation to give some good orgasms while not being overwhelming, and it's great for pinpointing specific places in the vaginal canal. If you like smoothness on your toys, this will probably be a good one for you. The LELO insignia might cause some aggravation, however, as it's deep-set enough to be noticed.

I also found that, while it does give good g-spot stimulation, I was unable to use this to achieve an orgasm from that alone. It's kind of hard to keep up a constant pressure on the g-spot with this because of both the length and the fact that the curve is so short and abrupt, which made it impossible for me to climax just by using it.

Follow-up commentary
As much as I've tried and tried to make this work for me... it still doesn't. It doesn't always fit the way my body needs and more often than not, this causes me pain, not pleasure - which isn't a thing I'm looking for in my sex-toys. The cons far outweigh the pros, for Ella - there's just not enough to redeem her. Beware; if your body doesn't like a sharply angled head like the Ella, this definitely won't be for you, even after prolonged use.

You've done a really great job with this review... really personal, and really explained what parts didn't work.

Also, you should teach me about shore hardnesses and how you measure them

Nominating you for the rumble!

@Antipova; thankyou! That means a lot, especially coming from someone I consider famous on here. (:

Shore hardness is essentially how 'squishy' something is; a gummibear is 15-20 shore hardness, the inside of your cheek is 25, 30 is your tongue, 35 is a pink pearl eraser, 40 is an inflated bike tire, a truck tire is 50, a hard-hat is 75 on the A scale.

I had to go and edit my review for the right one ( I typoed it, whoops! ). There's a bunch of ways to measure it; I kind of go off of 'common objects in relation to this item'.

And wow, thankyou so much for the nomination! I thought I'd never end up on there, it means a lot, haha.

This looks intimidating to me too as I'm a beginner. It looks like a nice toy, glad you learned how to use it comfortably. Great review.

This is a really great review - and I say that not just because I'm not a big fan of Ella since she didn't work for me - but because you really did a great job of describing why she doesn't work for you the best. I really do think a lot of it has to do with body type and the exact placement of your G-spot. I thought I'd love Ella because she is the same design as my favorite vibrators...not so much.

I hope you find something you like better - for me - it was the G-Ki.

Thanks for the wonderful review! This toy seems to work for a lot of people but it's great hearing from those that it didn't work for! The shoe hardness thing also highly interested me, thanks for the explanation!

  • ella vs. others
    • I want to get ella as my first she doesn't seem as menacing as the others made of glass or metal but are those materials better sensation wise?
    • It comes down to personal preference, really. You're not going to know if glass or metal feels better to you until you try.

A couple things to keep in mind, though: glass and metal have absolutely no give, so they tend to feel bigger than silicone toys of the same size. They're also rather heavy in most cases, and so you need to be a bit more careful when you use them. Being too rough can result in internal bruising. They're very slick and smooth, though, unlike silicone which typically has some drag to it.

The Ella is pretty rigid for a silicone toy, but it's very light and easy to use. It's great if you're new to dildos. :)

  • How Does Lelo Ella compare to Gigi?
    • I know that Ella doesn't vibrate, but are there many other differences? I am wondering whether the Ella might be a better shape or size for g-spot stimulation
    • i'm wondering this too. i bought gigi and was disappointed but ella seems even better should I or shouldn't I?

  • Would the Ella work well for a beginner?
    • I'm thinking of getting my bestfriend this for Christmas but she is new to toys. Would this be a good toy to give a newbie? I have not tried it myself so I'm not sure how easy it is to master.
    • I have the similarly shaped Gigi and found nothing but frustration when trying to thrust with it.
    • i think it would be a good option for a beginner.

  • I need help the Ella curve is doing me in.
    • I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have read every review and some twice. I can not figure this girl out. I want to write a review but, how can I write a review on something I do not get. Any ideas would be wonderful. Please help me enjoy this beautiful toy.
    • What do you not get about it? Not every toy works for every woman. Does it hurt to use? Maybe your vagina is too small for it yet or maybe you just need some lube. Do you not feel anything? Again, nothing is for everyone. Try sqeezing the toy by doing kegels when you use it. Some women say that makes things feel better. Or maybe try tilting it up towards your g-spot. That works for me with other toys.

I haven't used it yet. Just recently purchased a white Ella. And I can't wait! We've got the same name! :D
    • If you don't get it you can still write your review from that perspective. I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one who had that experience with it. I have the Ella and she's nice but she's not fireworks for me and that's ok. We all have different experiences with toys and that is what makes these reviews so valuable.

  • Dildo vs. Vibrator
    • I am having a hard time getting used to the idea of a dildo vs. a vibrator! As far as using one goes, how does one decide which is better for oneself? Just wondering and thanks!
    • Quote: I am having a hard time getting used to the idea of a dildo vs. a vibrator! As far as using one goes, how does one decide which is better for oneself? Just wondering and thanks!
What I mean by this I think is, is it easier with one than the other, or maybe does it require a different mind set or even is one better with partner play vs. solo? I don't know, LOL, just curious.
    • When we started with toys it was all about clit vibes for 'effective' reliable orgasms. But as we got into g-spot and a-spot stimulation, dildos have advantages over vibes because pressure is more important than vibes.

Now we almost always have some of both going on. A dildo for internal and a clit vibe for external - although she occasionally likes two vibes.

The only truism I've found is that what she wants/needs is different almost every time. I use to think 'this worked last time - so lets do it again' - but now I think 'we did that last time - what can I do to mix things up'.

That's why we have dozens of toys - both vibes and dildos.

  • Ella for beginners
    • Hey! I was just wondering if Ella would be something an absolute beginner could use, someone who's never gone looking for her g-spot before. She seems awfully tempting, but I wonder if I it's too advanced a toy for me?

Ella is perfect for beginners. I had tried several other G-spot toys before Ella. Ella was the first one that worked for me. Several people have had their first successes with Ella.

  • Ella and Gigi
    • I've had both the Ella and the Gigi sitting in my shopping cart for days now. I was wondering.. should I get them both, or should I maybe just get one to try, then maybe later on get the other if I want?

They both seem so worth it, it's hard to just pick one!

I just bought the Ella and have not tried it yet, but everyone seems to love it. I have had the GiGi for a couple of months and rarely use it, mainly because the control thing is located in the worst possible spot, and I invariably hit it and make the settings change! Argh! I also had no luck with it for g-spot stimulation, and the only times I get it out it is for clit work.

Even though I wasn't crazy about GiGi, it seems to do the job for a lot of people, so it might work for you. In fact, I bought it based on all the wonderful reviews. I've come to the conclusion that there is no one toy that will do the trick for everyone. Everyone is VERY different in their tastes and what they need.
    • I agree that no toy is good for everyone. I can not get a rabbit vibe that actually works for me by stimulating my clit and vag at the same time. Perhaps its operator error.
Anyway, I love the Gigi. I solved the control issue for me anyway by wiping the lube off the control and my fingers...success. The effectiveness of the Gigi is the vibe plus the design. I don't have the Ella, which is not a vibe but I see it as similar to many of the g spot dils available.
