I Want to Ride My Icicle!

The Icicles No.8 is one of the prettiest glass dildos I have seen with its blue swirl and soft waves. I think this is a perfect first glass dildo to try. It is slender enough that it will not be too much and with the waves, it allows you to easily become familiar with how glass feels without any other texture to confuse the issue. Both ends are insertable for vaginal or anal use and since it's also a pretty good body massager, I would recommend it to anyone.

Use

This is a glass dildo suitable for vaginal use or perhaps for body massage. The firmness of glass is wonderful for applying pressure to your G-spot. And, while it does have a ball at the base, I hesitate to say this is safe for anal use because glass becomes very slippery when lubed up. However, you can outfit it with a product such as flared bases as an add-on to make it anal safe. However, because this design is straight and not curved, it may be difficult for people to access their G-spot or P-spot. So, take this into consideration if this is important to you.

What is so nice about this particular style is the soft rippled design on the shaft and the conservative girth, making it suitable for most people, including beginners.

Because glass is such a rigid material, it tends to feel larger inside than a softer material, such as silicone and that is something to keep in mind. I also recommend using care when thrusting, for example, because it is easier to bruise yourself, or your partner's cervix due to the hard material. I know that very reason is why many people prefer using their glass toys for solo play.

One of the nice benefits to using glass is that it doesn't require much, if any, lubrication. Just a drop or two will provide plenty of slip, but be careful, it is easy to get glass too slippery to handle! I recommend having a cloth handy for using on the base to aid your grip.

The other benefit of glass is for temperature play. It is naturally cool to the touch and I enjoy that, but an ice water bath or a warm water bath are both good ways to experiment. Just beware using it on your sensitive bits without first testing it somewhere, for instance, on your inner wrist, before play!

Material / Texture

This dildo is made of hypoallergenic, Borosilicate glass. It is nonporous, body-safe and clean up is a snap. No need to worry about it breaking with normal use. As a matter of fact, this type of glass has been treated to be stronger and resist thermal shock better than regular glass. Your glass cookware and windows are examples of this type of treated glass and when it does break, it doesn't shatter, but breaks into large pieces. Simply run your hands over it carefully before use to see if there are any cracks or chips. However, it is really difficult to break these dildos, as evidenced in Toy Time Tim's video demonstrations, Glass Test #1 and Glass Test #2. If those demos don't put your mind at ease, I don't know what will!

So many things appeal to me about glass and the main one is that it is perfect for people with sensitivities, such as myself. It is non-reactive and nonporous, so you can use any lube you like, as well as sanitize it with ease. It also does not have any smell, nor does it retain any. It is a 10 out of 10 on the Eden Fantasys material safety scale which is as good as it gets in terms of a body-safe material for sex toy use!

Design / Shape / Size

This piece is so elegant and beautiful, you may not want to put it away after use. It is made of clear glass with a bright blue helix that runs through the center of the wand from tip to base.

On the outside surface there is an iridescent finish all over.

It is hand crafted so you can expect some slight differences in the exact measurements
measurements
This dildo is 7" overall, with an insertable length 5.5 " and has a diameter of 1" at the tip and 1.5" at the base. Either end is insertable, but about 1.5" is needed for holding.

Above is a size comparison to a standard Sharpie marker. You can see that this dildo is on the smaller side and that is why I chose it as my first piece.

Performance

I have already addressed the G-spot and P-spot use in the "Use" section. But, I will reiterate that this dildo is not curved and therefore, may not be the easiest for people to use to access their G-spot and P-spot. What I do find it good for, is as a beginning insertable because it is slender and non-threatening. The design is smooth and sleek with a soft undulation to the shaft which provides stimulation without being overwhelming, or rough.

I really like it because the rounded tip is always easy to insert, or run along my vulva. The inherent coolness and then the slow warming to body temperature is something I find pleasant. I know some people insert the large end, but I don't find that to be as comfortable for me. However, that may make it easier to find your G-spot with this toy.

I usually do not use lube with glass, unless it has lots of texture. But when I do, it only takes a drop to spread all over the surface. This has such a nice ripple effect upon insertion and thrusting, that it is stimulating without having a texture and I find that very easy to control and accommodate, so I think this makes a good design for beginners. If you find that this is not girthy enough for your taste, then there is a very similar design, the Reflections amber by Doc Johnson. Here is a side by side comparison of the two.
Icicles No. 8 vs Doc Johnson's Reflections Amber
With a diameter of 1.25" you wouldn't think it is much bigger than the Icicles No.8, but to understand the difference, just check out the above photo! You can read my other review where I talk more about the differences.

Care and Maintenance

Because it is nonporous, the clean up is as easy as soap and water, toy cleaner, a 10% bleach solution, or even putting it in the dishwasher sans soap, for a worry-free wash after the fun!

As long as you take care not to bang this against another hard surface, there isn't anything you need to worry about as far as storage or maintenance issues. Glass does not react to other materials in storage and only needs to be kept from breaking, so I recommend a sock, or a pouch to store it in. Or, do what I do and leave it out as an objet d'art, to catch the sun. I am prepared to tell anyone who asks that it is a magic wand and I use it to channel good energy to me. Hey, it's not that far from the truth, right?

With proper care, Icicles No.8 will last a lifetime.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Experience

This was my first glass dildo and it is still my prettiest. I was hesitant to try it since I never used glass before, but this was on sale and I decided to give it a go. It was the best decision I ever made as far a sex toys are concerned. Before this, I had tried some mystery materials and a few of the first silicone dildos on the market. However, I was unable to tolerate any of them and for the silicone, the price back then was far too steep for me to get larger version of the one that I was able to tolerate. So, until I came across glass this past year, I didn't have any dildos. Now, I have a number of them, including the ones in the following photo:
comparison to other glass dildos
I never have any problem with glass irritating me and with the affordability of it, I just love experimenting with all the different types of textures and sizes. If I had started with a different piece than the Icicles No.8, I don't know that I would have been as able to appreciate the benefits of glass. For example, if I had tried one of the textured ones, such as the Rainbow Wand, (on the far left in the above photo), I would have been overwhelmed by the roughness and never tried another glass piece. It really does pay to start without the bells and whistles and then move your way up and I find that true for most toys!
Follow-up commentary
I have had this for months and I still love it. But, it is now just a warm up piece because I can now accommodate larger girths. However, I still recommend this to anyone who wants to explore glass dildos for the first time!
