The Midnight Twist

Pyrex glass provides a great opportunity for toy designers to play with shape and texture, and the Midnight Twist is a perfect example. I was drawn to the beauty, the bold colors, and the unique texture combinations of the Midnight Twist, and it didn't disappoint. Thoughtfully designed, this is a beautiful, functional dildo with all the aesthetic appeal of art glass and the benefits of durable, nonporous Pyrex. You can spend a lot more than this, but you won't find better quality.

Use

The Midnight Twist is a dark blue Pyrex glass dildo. It features a raised thin white swirl design over the entire shaft, and a single line of raised clear glass bumps. While it's suggested as a double-ended, I don't find it really long enough for dual play. The bulb at whichever end you have free does make a good handle, though. While the raised bumps along the shaft might look imposing, I found them extremely pleasant inside, giving just enough variety in texture to keep things interesting; while they're meant to be on the underside, I think, the g-spotting curve at the bulbous end isn't so steep as to prevent you from using the bumps on the top if you prefer.

If you've never used a Pyrex dildo before, the strategy takes a little getting used to. You won't be able to thrust too hard or deep since the material is completely unyielding (bruising your cervix is a big turnoff!), and the angle of penetration becomes much more important than you might be used to. Proceed carefully until you're used to how far it can go, and how to angle it for your own internal shape. And the glass can be COLD when you first pick it up. A few minutes under warm water can fix the temperature if that bothers you (personally, I like feeling it warm to me), and it'll soon warm to body heat upon insertion. Definitely use a bit of lube, and the completely rigid nature can be lots of fun once you're used to it. Prepare for more subtle sensations as those raised bumps and the ridge of the head drag in and out, and the thrill of squeezing down on something with absolutely no give.

Material / Texture

Pyrex is an incredibly durable material, not fragile the way you'd think "glass dildo" might be. It's every bit as strong as a Pyrex baking dish or measuring cup for the kitchen. It's cool to the touch, but when you insert it, it warms up quickly to body heat (or you can run it under some warm water before you start to play).

As mentioned before, it's completely unyielding. So use a bit of lube, don't thrust too deep and be mindful of your angle, and you'll find the rigid, bumpy texture an exciting, unusual experience.

Pyrex dildos can carry hefty price tags -- up into the hundreds of dollars. Look for the word "Pyrex." As long as you know you're getting annealed Pyrex and not "lucite" or "glass," there's absolutely no difference in safety, durability or reliability of the product, only in the individual design and shape.

Design / Shape / Size

The Midnight Twist's shaft is mostly straight, with a slight G-spot-seeking bend at the bulbous end. The thin white swirl along the shaft provides enough traction when fingers or glass are slippery without fear of having it slip through your fingers. The bumps along the shaft provide the sensation of a continuous raised ridge while it's inside, adding a bit of variety to the texture and giving you a shape you can feel. The two heads are different shapes -- one more tapered, the other round -- and it's interesting to play with both. An extra row of bumps would be fun, so that they could be on both the "top" and "underside" at the same time, but it does work for me as is.

At 8 inches total length, I don't consider the dildo long enough to be seriously double-ended. It's a bit too long to be completely inserted, but just means there's more of the free end to use as a handle, and that swirl texture really helps with grip. It's definitely important to keep good hold on it if you're using it anally.

People who don't expect to see Pyrex dildos don't usually realize what they are at first glance, especially when they're as decorative as this one, so it may have a slight camouflage advantage if someone happens to come upon it. However, there's nothing very discreet about 8 inches of cobalt blue with white swirl, so use your own judgment. You can travel with it, but wrap it in a few socks and resolve not to be embarrassed if TSA wants to search your luggage. You can also use it in the bath, since it's fully water-friendly.

Performance

The slight curve of the Midnight Twist was just right to reach my g-spot, and not so distinct as to be uncomfortable when I turned it over to try the bumps along the top instead of the underside. Though it's unyielding, I found it narrow enough to insert and stroke in and out comfortably, while wide enough to feel. The shape of the heads and the size of the bumps provided just enough sensation without being too smooth, or having too many things happening at once.

Care and Maintenance

Pyrex glass toys are easy maintenance, non-porous, water-friendly, compatible with any sort of lube, and can be sterilized in boiling water or in a normal dishwasher cycle. Just be sure you remove it from the dishwasher before any unwelcome helpers decide to do the dishes! If privacy's more of an issue, it can also be sanitized with a 10% bleach solution or with isopropyl alcohol. For regular cleaning, you can use soap and water or commercially purchased toy cleaners/wipes.

Because the color is in the glass, cleaning products and lubes won't bleach or affect the appearance.

I usually store my glass dildos wrapped in a couple of thick socks, but this one comes with a plush, handmade bag. The bag I got was bright purple with a hot pink lining -- pretty but not discreet, if discretion is an issue. It's thick enough to use for safe storage, but wouldn't be insulating enough to protect it from a fall.

Give it an extra rinse with soap and water before use (just in case it's gathered any lint from storage) and you're good to go.

If you want to heat or cool it for temperature play, do it gently: let it sit in a dish of hot water or a dish of ice. Don't put it in the microwave, the oven, or the freezer, as rapid changes in temperature may make the glass crack.

Just like kitchen Pyrex, these toys are very durable and can withstand a lot of use. Unless you drop them, they're not going to shatter on you. However, they can chip and crack. Give Pyrex toys an inspection before use; if it's damaged in any way, don't use it. It's now art glass for your shelf, or a discussion piece for your next intimate dinner party.

    • Fragile

Personal comments

I have inner labia piercings and they give Pyrex toys a bit of volume. I enjoy the distinctive sound made by my metal rings bumping along the textured glass -- especially when I'm using the dildo on myself but with a partner, since the sound tells them not only exactly what I'm doing, but how vigorously I'm doing it. This gives the toy a mild "buzz" rating for noise, and makes it a little more "showy."

Great review! I've never had a glass toy before, so your "Use" explanation at the beginning was really helpful to me.

  • glass or pyrex
    • What's the difference? Pros and cons?
    • Pyrex is just a brand name for tempered glass, or borosilicate glass. It's like using the word "Kleenex" for all facial tissue. Same stuff, same safety rating. :) If you want to see just how safe this material is, check out these videos from Dwtim: link and link and here's a little information from EF's own material safety guide link

It's a really safe and wonderful material. Also, as a side note, I have the Midnight Twist, and it's FANTASTIC! :)
    • Not all glass is created equal. I think most glass toys on EF are pretty decent quality, but some I'm sure aren't as safe as pyrex is. Pyrex is designed to break into chunks instead of shattering. It's also less likely to break in the first place.

  • beginner and new to sex toys
    • I want to know what would be a great beginner dildo for just started out with sex toys.
    • Hey! I think it's great you want to start trying out toys. A few things to consider are whether or not you think you'll like length over girth or girth over length. And then you can move onto the different types of materials.

I, personally, prefer glass or silicone materials as they are non-porous and don't require condoms to keep them bacteria-free. They're a little more expensive, sometimes a lot more expensive but it's really worth it if you think about how many toys you may end up throwing out due to porous materials.

I like non-veined and toys that have veins but aren't overly pronounced with a slim girth. Investing in a good water based lubricant is also a good idea. I like the Sliquid collections.

Everyone is going to suggest different things and it's going to take trial and error before you find something you really like. Out of the dozens of toys I've tried, there are only three or four that I use all of the time. One of those is the Icicles No 17.
