Damn Dumb balls.

Although the Smart Balls didn't work for me, they're a wonderfully made, beautiful set of vaginal exercisers that I would recommend to anyone in a heartbeat. But if you have a tilted uterus or short vaginal canal, consider the Smart Balls Teneo Uno, something that the company itself recommends.
Published: June 30, 2010
Pros:
Adorable, great color selection, amazing material, body-safe.
Cons:
May be too large for some, beginners may want to try a single ball instead.

Use

The Fun Factory Smart Balls are a cute set of vaginal muscle exercisers intended to tone and strengthen your PC (pubococcygeus) muscles. Think of them as pilates for your pussy. The weighted balls work your muscles, potentially leading to stronger orgasms, or for those with incontinence issues, greater control. There seems to be some confusion about whether or not these are meant to be used for anal play, so let's clear that up right now. The Smart Balls are intended for VAGINAL use only. DO NOT put these balls up your ass, or up anyone else's ass. The muscles will suck them in, making retrieval difficult. The instructions provided with the Smart Balls also says specifically to keep the balls out of your tushie. So, keep them in your snatch.

One more thing. Those women with shorter vaginal canals or a tilted uterus may want to look at the Smartballs Teneo Uno as an option. This is what the included Fun Factory instructions recommend, and it's something I may invest in myself. I had problems with these beauties and after reading so many positive reviews, I wouldn't want another woman to waste money buying these and have the same problems I encountered.

Material / Texture

The Smart Balls are made of elastomed, a sort of plasticized elastomer that is phthalate-free and hypoallergenic. The texture is smooth and velvety, but the Balls themselves are rigid and well-built. The colored grooves that accent the main color of the Balls are of a harder elastomed. The retrieval cord is also covered in elastomed. There is absolutely no smell or taste to these things. It's a wonderful material and excellent design.
    • No odor
    • Not porous at all
    • Smooth

Design / Shape / Size

The Smart Balls look like a cat toy, or some sort of circus dumbbell. The balls are somewhat oval, connected by a thinner sheath of elastomed (this sheath is quite flexible which allows for greater manipulation when you insert them). Each ball is about 1 3/8" in diameter. I'm on the tighter side and felt no discomfort inititally inserting the balls. The balls together as a set are about 4" long, and the cord adds another couple of inches. The only design flaw that bothers me with these is the nub where the cord connects to the top ball. It's a bit like a nipple, a green nipple in my case (I got the magenta/pistachio set). The cord is fused to this nub with no visible seams, so it won't be a dirt trap. The way these balls are designed, I would see no problem leaving them anywhere out in the open, as long as you keep them away from small children and pets. They look like something you might hang from your rear view mirror in your car.

Performance

These Smart Balls are perfectly designed (sans nipple) and wonderful to handle and look at, but when it comes to my vagina, they cannot be tolerated. Over the past few years I have had many reproductive issues including endometriosis and fibroids. I have a tilted uterus, and found out literally the day AFTER I ordered these that it would be better for me to choose another vaginal exerciser (like the aforementioned Teneo Uno). The balls are easy enough to insert into the body. Get in a position you find comfortable. Some women find that inserting them in the same position you would insert a tampon, maybe with one leg propped on the toilet, helps. I tried them that way, and found that laying down and inserting them like a NuvaRing is much easier.

Lube is a must, and luckily these balls are compatible with both water-based and silicone lubes, and the package comes with a sample of luxe Fun Factory Bodyfluid, a silky silicone lube. Relax, take a breath, and grip the sheath that connects the balls, and nudge the first ball in. Your muscles should kind of take over and suck the ball in. Now you're left with the second ball, and you can just kind of nudge it up with a finger. The balls should normally fall right into place comfortably. I've read in reviews that the nub that connects to the cord can poke inside your vagina, but it's super easy to move it around.

Ideally, these can be worn comfortably inside while you go about your daily activities. Many women report becoming extremely aroused and wet while wearing the Smart Balls. For me, I couldn't keep them inside my body. I can get the first ball in perfectly, but the second ball will not stay inside. If I lie on my back completely still, then yes, I can wear these. But if I sneeze or move my leg, the second ball inevitably pops out. I can't stand up or walk with both balls inserted. I've tried several methods and tips and received great advice from many women on this website and nothing works for me.

Also, be warned if you use NuvaRing: when you remove these balls, the ring may come out with them. That's no problem; just rinse the ring back off and reinsert it. When I tried to keep both balls inside me, they were uncomfortable and the nub poked at me incessantly. It was downright painful and frustrating to no end.

Needless to say, I never felt any vibrating from the weighted balls inside the whimsical Smart Balls. I never got that far in my adventure with the balls.

To remove the balls, hold onto the cord and gently pull the balls out by bearing down a little bit. They are super easy to remove. Once you get the first ball out, just gently tug and get the second one out.

Care and Maintenance

A quick washing with mild soap and lukewarm water is all you need to keep these clean. They don't attract fuzz or lint, so storing them is easy. Honestly, mine are hanging on my closet doorknob since I'm not getting any good use out of them.
    • Easy to clean
    • Easy to store

Packaging

The Fun Factory packaging is ADORABLE. The tan box has a flap with a magnetic closure that you open to read a little bit about the product inside. Inside the tan box there is a plastic casing that the balls are nestled in but they aren't much for storing the balls in. There are instructions that come in 6 languages and are quite informative. The only confusing part about the instructions is that they also include instructions and details about the Smart Balls Teneo Duo and Uno. Sometimes I would get mixed up. Fun Factory is a German company and so the English translation is kind of amusing sometimes. It comes with a sample of amazing silicone lube that I just love.
    • Discreet looking packaging
    • Very informative

Experience

My personal experience with the Smart Balls left something to be desired. I would still recommend them to any woman who wants to strengthen her PC muscles, but if you have female plumbing issues like me, please research and do your homework before making your decision. I'll try these again one day and maybe they'll work, because they're such a quality product that I'm glad I own. Though if I keep having issues, I'm tossing them to the cats.

I am giving these three stars because even though I've gotten nothing but grief from these things, they're well made and gorgeous.

  • Sizes of PC balls
    • I just skimmed through another review for Smart Balls, and was wondering.. what's best for PC exercise? Small balls, right? I assume, the smaller they are, the more effort you'd have to put into keeping them in.

Also, what about the ones that are loose? Is it a good idea to just put two random balls up there? Has anyone ever had a problem getting them/one out?

I have the Smartballs, as well as the Luna Beads by Lelo. The Smartballs aren't very small, and don't take much effort (if any) to keep in. Same goes for the Luna Beads (which are just a tad smaller than the Smartballs).

I also have glass ben wa balls, as well as tiny metal ones. I've never really had problems with the glass ones randomly falling out (the only ones to ever do that were the metal, since they're so small). Nothing can become "lost" in your vagina, since the cervix acts as a barrier to the rest of your reproductive system. To take the loose ben wa balls out, all I do is squat or lay down and hook them with my finger (one at a time) to remove them.

[I have this philosophy that if you aren't willing to stick a finger up yourself to remove them, you really shouldn't be putting them in your vagina in the first place.]
    • Also, if you're having trouble getting the balls out, you can squat and bear down to "push" them out a little more.

Personally, I'd use something with a string, since it's hard for me to pop things in to my vagina in the first place.

  • Ben wa balls
    • Well, I do not know much about them and I really would like to. I am not sure where to start. I read a fantasy about them and a lot of the post and reviews mention wearing them while out and about or even working out. So I would love to give that a try. I think I want some with weight and a cord that I do not have to worry about getting germy so...help please

I really want some also, and I'll probably be settling for these versus the Smart Balls or Luna Beads, simply because of size. I'm a pretty petite woman and I don't think I could use either of those products comfortably for a good amount of time. Plus, you can't have intercourse with the Smart Balls!

I'm not too worried about a cord, unless the balls are attached. I've had some, uh, "interesting" things in my vagina before that I was able to push out easily, so I'm not afraid to use a cordless set.

What do you mean by "getting germy"?

Some of the reviews said the nylon cords did not clean too well and so they had to throw the balls away sooner than they thought. I think I am going to get either the Smart Balls or the Desi. I don't really like the cord on the smart balls. It doesn't look sturdy enough and the Desi sit in a girdle and looks like a lot of work to clean.

  • Smart Balls can go in the ass, apparently
    • On the product description: "These weighted balls are coated in elastomed to help make them easier to clean and keep clean. This also makes them a good toy to use anally as well."

      Seriously? Seriously?

I dunno, there is a pretty good size difference between the covered string and the two balls...I honestly never thought of that, but it looks like it'd work fine.
    • I seriously would advise against it. If the first ball goes in, the second one probably would go in as well. There are a lot of anal toys that lack a good base to make them butt safe, and it is a shame really. I always advise against using toys anally unless they have a good sized flange base. A smooth ball shape is not going to stop a toy from getting sucked inside. I don't own a set of anal beads yet because of this...I just don't feel most of them are safe.

The material is another concern with the smart balls. The Elastomed is non porous, but not technically sterilizable. Fun Factory advises against boiling them even.

Bottom line is that these are intended and designed for vaginal use only.

  • Smart Balls material question
    • Blah, I mistakenly posted this as a reply to another question on the Smart Balls site. But I'm really curious, so I'm posting it again:
I'm wondering what I should recommend to a friend when it comes to vaginal balls. I'm happy with the Desi, but I still wish it were entirely silicone. The Smart Balls are listed as silicone (yay!), but on the first review link the Product Specialist said that they were made of elastomed with a silicone finish. What does this mean? Could my friend sterilize them? It seems like the Smart Balls are safer than the other options on the site, but I just wanted to ask someone who knows more than me!
    • Well as for the best recommendation to a friend for specifically vaginal balls then I would most likely say these Smart balls, but this is dependent on her purpose and what task she is trying to accomplish:
If she is looking to strengthen kegels (PC Muscles) then these are a good option but, balls in general are not going to be the best. The best option for PC Strength is a weighted dildo (such as Glass or Steel).
If her purpose is to have an orgasm with these, then again I don't think balls are the best option. In this case it would be best to go with a vibrating egg or bullet (2-3 would be best if she is looking for a massive orgasm) 1 on clit, 1 vaginally, and 1 anally (optional, but could really enhance the pleasure)
If your friend is looking for a method of foreplay and neither to get off, or just starting to strengthen PC muscles then the balls would be the best option. (and the best balls would probably be Smart Balls)

I am pretty sure these balls are actually listed as the wrong material, since they are not 100% silicone. Doing some googling research on these balls, they are actually made of elastomed which is basically elastomer. They will soft like silicone but semi- porous. Even if they do have a silicone “coat” I wouldn’t risk sterilizing them in boiling water, but indeed they can be washed with soap or toy cleaner. (I would be sure to try and try them well to ensure that not a lot of water is left behind in the small pores.)

As for the safeness of SmartBalls, I am unable to judge on that, but just looking at these makes me think the center line would snap, especially if used anally.
-->” It seems like the Smart Balls are safer than the other options on the site” Hmm, compared to what? I am not really sure if you are comparing them to other Smartballs (which indeed these would probably be the safest) or if you are comparing them to other toys (in which there are much safer options out there than these. Ex: 100% silicone Tantus dildos & plugs, anal specific objects, weighted dildos, quality vibrating eggs/balls)

You also might want to find out what your friend’s purpose is and I can further help you (Ex: if she wan’t a toy for vaginal, anal, or both usage, what she intends this toy to do for her --> (Orgasmic, Exercising, For play, Experimentation, etc)

Hopefully this helps, and if you post back with any info, then the next time I check out the forums I will try to help you further. Due to sometimes my forgetful mindset, once you post a reply back, feel free to send me an email and say something like “hey please reply here:” (haha) just so I remember to check back here, and don’t abandon you for a month :P.

Wow, thanks for the response. She's thinking specifically vaginal balls--exercising rather than exciting. I'm just really confused because Smart Balls are listed as silicone but don't seem to have more than a silicone coating? I'd like to recommend her to something that can be sterilized (even though she won't be sharing, so something like the Desi could work, even though it has non-silicone parts). But with so many people such big fans of the Smart Balls I'm mostly wondering--are they silicone? Elastomed? What are they, and what does it mean (are the reviews correct, can it be sterilized, etc.)?
And if they're not silicone, shouldn't the listing be fixed? *is perplexed*

Well, you can take them out, but you don't have to. I personally leave them inside and feel no discomfort.

Yup, you can leave them in. It might even make for better exercise! Just watch out for the string, maybe tuck it inside first.

There are a few reviews that say the Royal balls break in the *thin* center part between the balls. Anyone had this experience with the Smart Balls? Any advice would be great!

I've only had good experiences with my Smart Balls, and haven't experienced breakage, or heard of that from anyone else.

I've never had a problem with Smart Balls, or heard of any similar issue.

Smart Balls are very nice, but you get more options with the Luna Balls...you can mess around with different weights, which might be helpful if you are trying to increase the strength of the pelvic muscles.

I'd rate the Luna ones as best, just because of the adjustability...But Smart Balls are certainly very good too :)))
