Holding down the button does change the vibration intensity, but it doesn't have an indicator or anything, so it can be hard to tell if you've held it down long enough or if it's as high as it will go, and holding it down more will bring you back to the lowest setting. The biggest problem I had with tightening it to turn it on was that it can be nearly impossible to screw the cap tight enough when you have lube on your hands, and I have to wash the toy while it vibrates to keep water from getting into the battery compartment.
