Frosty or Steamy?

If you love your glass toys for temperature play, and find it cumbersome to hold a vibrator against a glass toy's base for extra stimulation, then this may be just the toy for you. Its vibrations are of moderate strength, but are decidedly on the deeper, almost rumbly side; its glass material is non-porous and very easy to clean. I do wish it had a silkier feel, though.

Use

The Ecstasy is a member of the Reflections line of glass vibrators by Doc Johnson. It can be used as an external vibrator for any part of the body: nipples, clits, testes, penises, anuses, et cetera. It can also be used for penetration by people of any sex, though if you plan to use this as an anal insertion toy, I highly recommend availing yourself of the silicone Vibrator Enhancer in the medium size--it will provide a safety stop to keep the toy from taking refuge in an unreachable spot.

DJRE01

In addition to offering the choice of external or internal vibrations, this toy is a great choice for lovers of temperature play. Glass is a pretty good conductor, which means that it can be quickly warmed or cooled to your liking; it will hold that temperature longer than metal toys, too.

Material / Texture

The Ecstasy is coated in a thick layer of translucent purple borosilicate glass--glass that has been strengthened against shattering and can handle high temperatures. Glass is completely non-porous, making it very hygienic and easily sterilizable, as microscopic creepy-crawlies have nowhere to hide and multiply. Its core and battery-compartment cap are hard ABS plastic, which is also non-porous and free of harmful phthalates, and can be sterilized, too.

The plastic battery cap is smooth and shiny, with a circular Doc Johnson logo in silver. The glass, though, has a frosted finish which is slightly shimmery when light hits it at a certain angle. This frosted surface isn't quite as smooth and silky as other frosted glass I've felt; it has a very slight grainy feel to it, and when rubbed against my palm it makes a sound similar to someone walking in corduroy pants. I found that this texture added too much friction for me, especially when combined with its girth.

In addition the the frosted finish, the surface features eight lengthwise creases, with half-inch rounded ribs between those creases. This gives it a juicer-like look:

Design / Shape / Size

The Ecstasy measures 6 1/2" in length, with 5" of that being insertable. It has an overall torpedo-like shape, with a rounded, tapered tip that widens to an almost-central bulge, then tapers slightly back down and ends in a couple of inches of uniform width. The widest part of this toy is 1 5/8" in diameter, or 5 1/8" circumference; the cylindrical segment near the base is 1 3/8" in diameter, and 4 1/2" around.

DJRE05

I found this toy to be too wide to insert much past the tip, though I do usually prefer my smaller, slimmer toys anyway. However, the hard glass material also adds to the feeling of greater girth, so this toy may not be best for insertion unless you're willing and able to handle larger toys.

Functions / Performance / Controls

As a vibrator, this toy is pretty simple. There is a translucent white button in the center of the base/battery cap, made of a rubbery material. The number "3" is printed on this button, which presumably is there to help you out in case you forget how many vibration speeds the toy can deliver. The first speed offers about 2.5 vrooms and 2 bees, the second gives you 3 vrooms and 2.5 bees, and the third I'd rate at 3.5 vrooms and 3 bees. To turn the toy off, you must click through to the end of the three speeds; there is no immediate shut-off function, but you can get to the "off" setting pretty quickly. The glass transmits vibrations very well, while the slightly softer plastic of the base doesn't vibrate quite so much, which is nice on your hand. The vibrations are also nicely low-pitched, which was very pleasant for me.

DJRE03

The only downside here, unless you count the lack of vibration patterns or more speed settings, is that each time you press the button to switch to the next speed, the vibrations stop while you're pressing it. This has the potential to be annoying or disruptive for some.

You'll only need a single AA battery for this toy, which makes its deep, medium-power vibrations even more impressive. The plastic base screws off, and a slip of paper curled around the battery compartment shows you which way to insert your battery (negative side up). The cap can be a little fiddly to screw back on properly; be gentle with it so as not to damage the threads.

Care and Maintenance

Being non-porous and waterproof, cleaning is nice and simple: just use soap and water or an antibacterial toy cleaner for everyday purposes, or wipe down with isopropyl alcohol for sterilizing. You can also soak the glass portion in a 10% bleach solution for ten minutes, but be careful not to dunk the plastic parts, as it may harm their surface.

Glass and plastic are both compatible with any type of lubricant you should desire, whether water-based, silicone-based, or oil-based. I suggest storing this toy in a soft pouch or box--somewhere where it's not in danger of knocking against other hard-material toys, which could crack or chip it.

Packaging

The Ecstasy's package is very simple: a clear plastic box covered in purple and pink swirls, circles, and hearts, and a clear plastic insert shaped to fit the toy. It's not discreet in any way, but would be fairly easy to gift-wrap. The front looks like this:

DJRE06

The back shows a very prettily-worded marketing description for the Reflections product line (including the word "pallets" when I'm sure they must have meant "palettes"):

On the side is a concise, eight-point run-down of the features of this toy and others in the collection:

DJRE08

This packaging could be used for storage, as it isn't too hard to open and close, it's not much bigger than the toy itself, and it would keep your glass safe from impacts. On the other hand, it's recyclable, and there are much nicer ways to store your toys than in a rather kitschy box.

Personal comments

I was a bit disappointed by the appearance of this toy. The product page images make it look like a sort of glowing, almost shiny violet color, but in person it's much more dull in color and luster. I think it would look much prettier if it had a finer frosted texture, and if the opaque plastic core was smaller, allowing a thicker coating of the translucent glass. As it is, the toy doesn't even look like glass, but rather like a matte-textured plastic.

Experience

Due to the unforgiving nature of glass, the slightly wider-than-average girth, and the friction-creating texture of the Ecstasy, I was not able to use it for penetration. However, I greatly enjoyed the low-pitched vibrations in the bath this evening. I found that the first speed was enough to bring me to orgasm in a fairly short period of time--somewhere between five and ten minutes, I think--and then once I was over the edge, the second and then the third speed kept me in ecstasy a bit longer, without over-stimulating my sensitive clit (though the way the vibrations shut off briefly between speeds was less than ideal). It wasn't a mind-blowing orgasm, but then, I didn't spend much time working up to it either. I'm looking forward to trying this with some temperature play.
Follow-up commentary
Despite its lackluster looks, I brought this toy along on the mini-vacation my partner and I took last week, and was glad I did. Our room had a big Jacuzzi tub, and the waterproof feature came in handy, as did the hard, temperature-conducting material and the deep, lower-pitched vibrations! My partner even used it as her "wake-up call" on our last morning there.

Thank you for the detailed review. If you hadn't mentioned it's made of glass, I also thought it was coated in plastic.

Bigger then I thought it would be from your pics. I have been debating on one of these for a good bit. It would be too weak for me to use though
